The future of coffee depends on a thriving planet . That’s why at Starbucks, we have ambitious goals to cut our climate, waste and water footprints in half by 2030. One of the biggest impacts to carbon emissions? Fertilizer. Healthy trees mean high quality, great tasting coffee. By dividing our farm into separate plots, with varying levels of soil nutrition, allows us to analyze coffee quality, productivity, coffee tree conditions and carbon emissions. Through learnings from Hacienda Alsacia, our farmer support centre’s focus on soil analysis for farmers to understand what the ideal environment is for their coffee trees. Such as replacing generic fertilizer with a specific soil nutrient ‘recipe’ custom to the land. Known as ‘Precision agriculture’ in coffee farming, has great potential to reduce on-farm carbon footprint.
