We’re delighted to celebrate a Mercy Award winner among our rehabilitation and behavioral health units: Michelle Rispoli. Michelle has been a nurse for decades and has been working with Saline Health System for the past four years. In December 2022, Michelle was named director for the behavioral health unit. “Michelle’s focus and intention of creating a culture of empathy for our patients, a culture of inclusivity for her employees, a created space of safety and growth, can only be developed by a gifted and compassionate leader,” said Rita Snider, AVP of Strategic Growth and Operations. The Mercy Award recognizes one employee from each of Lifepoint Health’s hospitals who profoundly touches the lives of others and best represents the spirit and values on which the company was founded: compassion, dedication and a merciful spirit. Each hospital winner, including Michelle and Shantonio, will be considered for Lifepoint’s companywide Mercy Award. The companywide winner will be announced this summer.

This presentation will provide an in-depth analysis of the case of Elizabeth Wettlaufer, a former registered nurse who committed a series of murders and attempted murders in Ontario's long-term care facilities. My study will focus on a critical examination of the pre-incident indicators that were overlooked, potentially preventing the tragic events. Through this case, I hope to enhance threat assessment methodologies in healthcare settings and contribute to the development of proactive measures for identifying and mitigating risks. A patient who shares their positive experience in a story is recommending you in a way that is memorable and full of opportunity for your organization. Luigi Pirandello, the Italian playwright said: “A fact is like a sack which won’t stand up when it is empty. In order that it may stand up, one has to put into it the reason and sentiment that caused it to exist.” A story can efficiently convey multiple reasons why someone should choose you. Greenwich Hospital in CT created a video to celebrate the opening of a new wing. A patient told her story of how newly obtained equipment for ambulance crews helped her survive a heart attack and how cardiac rehabilitation restored her vitality. Her results included: “I’ve seen four more grandchildren come into the world. I feel great!” Hospital executive Jeff Atwood invited managers to bring employees who had been recognized by patients or family to hospital board meetings. The manager would tell the board how meaningful the associate’s kindness was for the patient or family. This process : - created memorable experiences for the staff member, the manager and the board. - reinforced the organization’s mission, vision and values. - provided good stories to share in the community. This is American Heart Month. “During American Heart Month, we’re celebrating all the bold hearts who have made an impact in saving lives through CPR,” said Nancy Brown, American Heart Association chief executive officer. “At the American Heart Association, it’s our vision to advance health and hope for everyone, everywhere. Children as young as nine can learn CPR and since nearly 3 out of 4 cardiac arrests that do not happen in a hospital, occur in the home, it's critical that all families know how to perform CPR.” CPR – or cardiopulmonary resuscitation – is an emergency lifesaving procedure performed when the heart stops beating. During American Heart Month, the Association is offering four ways to learn CPR and join the Nation of Lifesavers, as an individual, family, organization or community at heart.org/nation.
