Companies like Swarmer are at the forefront, developing systems that allow drones to operate in interconnected networks, making decisions instantaneously. As Serhiy Kupriienko, CEO of Swarmer, puts it, "For a swarm of 10 or 20 drones or robots, it's virtually impossible for humans to manage them." Enter AI, which can handle hundreds of drones, streamlining operations and safeguarding human pilots. The Drone Age (New Study) 🛩 Researchers at Oregon State University (OSU) have demonstrated in a study that a single individual can effectively command a swarm of over 100 autonomous drones. This finding, part of the DARPA-funded Offensive Swarm-Enabled Tactics (OFFSET) program, has significant implications for fields like firefighting, package delivery, and disaster response in urban areas. The four-year study involved testing swarms of up to 250 autonomous vehicles, including aerial drones and ground rovers, in environments where traditional communications are hindered. It aimed to develop systems and interfaces that allow a "swarm commander" to manage these drones using high-level commands, similar to a quarterback directing a football team. Conducted in military urban training sites, the study also assessed the potential military applications of drone swarms. The swarm commanders, using a virtual reality interface developed by Smart Information Flow Technologies, successfully managed large numbers of drones under challenging conditions, showing the feasibility of single-person control of large drone swarms.
