As nurses, we often become so accustomed to utilizing our skills within a hospital environment that we fail to recognize the breadth and depth of our nursing abilities that have been honed over several years, not even a retirement should take it away from us except we chose not to utilize them. Some of these essential nursing skills include: practical skills, critical thinking skills, emotional intelligence skills, advocacy skills, mentorship skills, teaching skills, communication skills, documentation skills, and reporting skills. However, the world and the nursing profession are constantly evolving. Therefore, we should not find it difficult to adapt and evolve using our various skills to make a meaningful impact in the world. We have all the necessary tools and expertise to benefit ourselves and others beyond the hospital walls. So, let us not limit ourselves to being just nurses. What is your big reason you became a nurse? Virginia Avenel Henderson (1897–1996) Henderson would become known as the “First Lady of Nursing” for her development of a theory of nursing that became fundamental to nursing education. As she stated, “The unique function of the nurse is to assist the individual, sick or well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health or its recovery (or to peaceful death) that he would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength, will or knowledge. And to do this in such a way as to help him gain independence as rapidly as possible.” She undertook the revision of a nursing text—Textbook of the Principles and Practices of Nursing—and the resulting work became a core text in hospital nursing schools across America. In addition, she oversaw the compilation of a four-volume reference guide to nursing research papers published between 1900 and 1960, called the Nursing Studies Index. For her pioneering work as a nurse educator, public health nurse, researcher and theorist, Henderson was inducted into the American Nurses Association Hall of Fame and awarded the Christiane Reimann Prize by the International Council of Nurses. While the Nursing Associate role has helped bridge the skill sets between Nursing Assistant and RN, there exists an issue which I firmly believe threatens the role. Each NHS trust has their own policies and procedures, but in the training of nursing associates, how many have a specific policy that states what trainee nursing associates (TNA’s) can and cannot do; the clinical skills they can definitively engage in and the ones they cannot? The answer…not many. Furthermore, the skills that TNA’s practice vary from trust to trust. Some NHS Trusts allow their TNA’s to practice the skill of cannulation for example, or preparing IV’s whereas others don’t…but again, there’s is no definitive policy in many cases. HEE need to work in partnership with all trusts to ensure a uniformed policy across all trusts. If they don’t, I fear the TNA’s of today will become the SEN’s of yesterday.
