Back to school is around the corner, and for many young athletes, it can also mean a time of greater risk for sports-related injuries. Matt Irwin, a talented young quarterback, sustained a fractured shoulder blade while playing football for Owyhee High School. During a tackle, he landed forcefully on his right side, resulting in the injury. Dr. Derek Kunz oversaw his treatment, opting for conservative sports medicine management to allow the bone to heal naturally, followed by a tailored a comprehensive rehabilitation program. The result — restored strength and mobility to Irwin's shoulder and a return to the field in optimal health and performance. Watch the video to learn more about his journey to healing. #ourcallingisyou #sportsmedicine

Concussions in football are a pressing concern that's garnered increasing attention in recent years. The physicality of the sport puts players at risk for head injuries, with concussions being one of the most common. Despite advancements in equipment and rule changes aimed at reducing head trauma, the issue persists. Concussions not only pose immediate health risks but can also have long-term consequences, including cognitive impairment and mental health challenges. Research indicates that repeated concussions, even mild ones, can lead to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease. Addressing concussions requires a multi-faceted approach, including improved helmet technology, stricter enforcement of safety protocols, and better education for players, coaches, and officials. Additionally, promoting alternative playing techniques that minimize head contact can help mitigate the risk. Ultimately, prioritizing player safety without compromising the essence of the game is essential for the future of football. #health #tennis #Redoakintruments #injury #newmedicaldevice #monitor #detect #concussions #noninvasive #Hipaacompliant #MadeinAmerica #shoulderpain #Lowerbackpain #injuries

The rate of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries among high school athletes has grown significantly over the past 15 years, according to a new data analysis by organizations collaborating to assess and address the problem of serious knee injuries. The National ACL Injury Coalition reviewed injury data for 12 major girls and boys sports over five three-year periods from 2007 to 2022, as supplied by certified athletic trainers in the High School RIO surveillance program. From period one to five, the average annual ACL injury rate grew 25.9% to 7.3 injuries per 100,000 athlete exposures. ACL injuries now represent more than 14% of all injuries involving the knee. “The negative health impacts of ACL injuries are significant, both in the short-term and the long-term,” said Joseph Janosky, DrPH, MSc, PT, ATC, lead researcher for the coalition’s analysis and director of athlete health at HSS, a founding partner of the coalition. “Among the most concerning long-term health issues is the development of osteoarthritis after ACL injury. It's important for high school athletes and their parents and coaches to understand that the health issues related to ACL injury can last a lifetime.” Read the full article at: https://brnw.ch/21wF7aE

#concussions are one of the enduring challenges in the realm of contact sports. These injuries result from the forceful impact of a blow, bump, or jolt to the head or body, prompting the brain to move rapidly inside the skull and disrupting its normal functioning. The statistics surrounding sports-related concussions in the United States underscore the urgency of addressing this issue. An estimated 1.6 to 3.8 million sports and recreation-related concussions occur annually in the country. A significant portion of these cases involves children and youth aged 5-18, contributing to approximately 2.4 million sports-related emergency department visits every year. Now, there is a development of new technology that is planning to help transform this landscape and also help protect players from the dangers of brain injuries. Renowned surgeon James Andrews stresses seriousness of youth sports injuries • Overuse injuries have increased 10-fold in young athletes since 2000. The number of younger athletes having ACL and Tommy John surgeries continues to soar. • Improper technique, ill-fitting equipment, training errors and coach/parental pressure contribute to youth sports injuries. • There should be pitch counts for youth baseball and softball. The notion that softball’s underhand motion is natural and limits injuries is a myth. • Minimum time for a youth/teen athlete to return to play after an ACL surgery is nine months. The chance of an injury to the same knee or the other knee rises significantly with earlier return to play. https://lnkd.in/eCr9_NVR
