On June 28, Apogee Physicians, the largest entirely physician-owned and operated Hospitalist group in the nation, named President of Eastern Oregon Dina Ellwanger “CEO of the Year” and Program Director for Saint Alphonsus Medical Director-Ontario Hospitalist Services Dr. Augustine Okeke “Program Director of the Year." This award recognizes high-performing providers from more than 30 states who consistently demonstrate success from patient satisfaction to recruitment and readmissions. “Dina was honored for her long history of dedication to Apogee patients and providers. Apogee is in its 13th year in Ontario, in great part because of the culture that Dina has built,” said Apogee Division 1 President Dr. Dennis Klein. A New Era Beyond the HITECH Act: Empowering Patients with MyRxWallet While the HITECH Act of 2009 laid the groundwork for standardizing electronic health records (EHR), it’s time to move beyond its limitations. At MyRxWallet, we’re leading a revolution in healthcare technology that prioritizes patient autonomy and data security. Unlike traditional systems that lock patients into predefined formats, MyRxWallet gives patients full control over their medical records. Our technology empowers patients with explicit directives to their providers: medical information is never to be disclosed or discussed without written consent. Upon completing a diagnosis and treatment plan, any information entered into the EHR by the provider is removed or blacked out after the necessary reimbursement processes are completed. Too often in healthcare, we ask that resilient individuals keep systems afloat instead of building resilient systems. We just completed the six-month mark of transforming the Juravinski Hospital from a traditional internal medicine clinical teaching unit (CTU) to a hospitalist model of care. What started as a project to improve resident workloads/safety (by concentrating residents at Hamilton General and St. Josephs Healthcare Hamilton) has helped us build a more resilient care model. Like most Ontario hospitals, we have seen an increase in internal medicine consults and admissions. In our case, that increase has been close to 20%. During December, we saw record-breaking numbers of patients admitted to Juravinski Hospital, higher than our COVID surges. The hospitalist model has given us flexibility, and our recruitment has allowed us to scale and increase physician coverage to match patient numbers. We would not have been able to manage these volumes with our previous CTU model. Thank you 🙏 : The JH hospitalist transformation required significant financial investment by Hamilton Health Sciences, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and McMaster University’s Dept of Medicine. It also required thousands of hours of work by McMaster faculty, HHS leadership, and employees. 💡 Placing a nasogastric tube involves risks. As healthcare providers, we should always strive for accurate placement. Our study examined the clinical effectiveness of the corrected nose-earlobe-xiphoid distance formula (CoNEX) for determining the internal length of nasogastric tubes in adults.
