BMW Group and Airbus lead the €4.7bn hydrogen transport IPCEI initiative approved by the European Commission. "The Hy2Move project will support research, innovation and the first industrial deployment in the hydrogen value chain in transport with €1.4bn of state money. This is expected to unlock a further €3.3bn of private investment in fuel cells for buses, trucks, trains and aircraft, as well as storage and refuelling stations." A great day yesterday at the Connected Places Summit. I joined a panel with partners from ULEMCo Ltd, ZeroAvia, and easyJet to discuss hydrogen innovation for aviation, airports, and beyond. It's inspiring to see different parts of the industry, and different sectors, coming together and pulling in the same direction. This joint venture, equally owned by TotalEnergies and Air Liquide, is set to revolutionize hydrogen distribution for heavy-duty vehicles across Europe. 🚛 TEAL Mobility's mission is clear - to fast-track the development of hydrogen infrastructure for heavy-duty trucks by establishing a robust network of 100 stations along major European corridors. We aim to amplify the momentum across the entire, benefiting truck manufacturers and transport operators. 🚚 Watch the video below documenting the fifth and final stage of our European BioLNG Tour. This sees us visit IVECO’s Industrial Village headquarters in Turin, where Giorgio Delpiano and Gerrit Marx formalised Shell and IVECO’s commitment to advancing the decarbonisation of the road transport sector by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).    🤝 When we set out from Berlin at the start of this tour, the goal was to prove that a long-haul route through Europe in a truck was possible using #bioLNG. Along the way, we explored how strategic cooperation, innovative technology and policy leadership could work together to make this a reality. The MoU is the culmination of this and will see Shell and IVECO collaborate on the joint development of low-carbon energy solutions for the road transport sector.    🛣️ But, of course, underpinning all of these areas has been a focus on efficiency, so the real questions we know you want answered are: “Did it work?” and “What were the results?”. Well, having travelled roughly 2,130km across Europe, we can proudly say that the bio-LNG provided by Shell and Biwi for the tour helped to achieve a 100% CO₂e reduction which is equivalent to 2 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂e), compared to B7 diesel on a life cycle bases*.   🚛 However, it’s important to remember that the route to #decarbonisation remains complex. A range of low- and zero-emission options are already available today, but each is at a different stage of commercial readiness. A mosaic of solutions will be needed at different stages of the journey towards decarbonisation and must be enabled by sector collaboration. Last week, Air Liquide had the pleasure of welcoming Maroš Šefčovič, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, and his team to our headquarters. We were excited to present the level of maturity that the H2 mobility ecosystem in Europe has now reached: >> Multiple automotive OEMs are deploying trucks and light commercial vehicles, like recently announced by Stellantis >> Significant H2 retail infrastructure development initiatives like TEAL Mobility (our joint company with TotalEnergies) and HYSETCO >> Large H2 supply chain investments like our Trailblazer 20 MW electrolyzer in Germany and the upcoming Normand'Hy 200 MW electrolyzer in France. Hydrogen is thus a critical solution to enable the #decarbonization of transport in Europe and beyond, as a complementary solution to batteries. The European Commission's continued support for hydrogen mobility will be decisive in the years ahead. It will be important to reach a critical market size, both in terms of the number of vehicles and hydrogen refueling stations deployed, and to put in place a #pragmatic #roadmap for the decarbonization of hydrogen used for mobility applications. For example, we’re playing a role in decarbonising the aviation industry by winning new sustainable aviation fuel (#SAF) licences. ✈️ In fact, in case you missed it, JM and bp’s co-developed, award-winning, Fischer Tropsch CANS™ technology has been chosen by EDL Anlagenbau Gesellschaft mbH for its HyKero plant in Böhlen-Lippendorf, Germany. The HyKero plant is a commercial scale power-to-liquids SAF production facility, the first of its kind in Germany. Based on a typical widebody aircraft fuel consumption rate, the HyKero plant's planned SAF production capacity is equivalent to the fuel required for over 1,000 transatlantic flights annually.
