States are optimistic about new and growing prevention efforts and eager to provide additional supports for families—including families with infants and toddlers—that truly meet their needs and reduce child maltreatment and child welfare system involvement. With the current emphasis on expansion, this is an ideal time for new and constructive partnerships between child welfare and early childhood agencies to set common goals, leverage new opportunities, and navigate challenges. As states across the country continue to invest in prevention, Child Trends recommends state leaders: 🤝 Reduce silos across and between agencies and their partners. 🤱 Increase supports specifically designed to meet the needs of families with very young children. 🗣 Promote equity in policies and practice, and bring parents with lived expertise into decision-making roles. 📜 Facilitate the use of the federal Family First Act in their overall prevention efforts.

CASA Volunteers are specially trained people from all walks of life who are appointed by the Court to advocate for the best interest of children and youth who have experienced abuse and/or neglect. CASA Volunteers make a life-changing difference for children. They work with child welfare professionals, attorneys, educators and service providers to ensure that judicial officers have all the information they need to make decisions for each child. Is there anything more precious than a child? More than 390,000 children in the U.S. are in the child welfare system today because they endured abuse or neglect at home. And many of them are right here in Indiana. Every day, at Child Advocates, we stand up for their rights seeking justice, equity, and well-being for each of them. And our attorneys help these vulnerable children find a permanent and safe home. We offer a unique direct representation program--the only one in Indiana that provides a free, in-house attorney for older children, statewide, to represent their legal needs. We support their right to be involved in their future. We also offer free, educational liaisons across Indiana to help children succeed if they are struggling in school. In our Annual Report, we released several key findings. There are many challenges in child welfare and juvenile justice that remain to be addressed and some new issues have been identified. Here is one key finding. Three common safety concerns for mothers and fathers of children in out-of-home care with a goal of reunification or family preservation were mental health, substance use, and domestic violence. The majority of mothers and fathers were making at least some progress on these issues at the time of review.
