Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas on June 19, 1865. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, it wasn't until two and a half years later that all enslaved people in the United States were finally freed. This day stands as a powerful reminder of the long and ongoing struggle for freedom and equality in our country. To honor Juneteenth, SAFE’s Black and African American Staff Taskforce hosted a Juneteenth Jubilee! This Jubilee was a gathering of joy, community, and celebration in honor of the freedom of all African Americans. Staff enjoyed great food, beautiful performances, and a wonderful moment to share culture. Celebrate beyond Juneteenth by adding some great reads to your summer reading list! Thanks again to the staff who shared their picks: • Critical Race Theory, The Key Writings that Formed the Movement • The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois • How Long ‘Til Black Future Month? By N.K. Jemisin • On Juneteenth by Annette Gordon-Reed • Night Wherever We Go by Tracey Rose Peyton • I Can’t Wait to Call You My Wife by Rita Roberts • Uncomfortable Conversations With a Black Man by Emmanuel Acho
