Military ‘exposed to missile threats’ The Australian’s Ben Packham I’d take this a step further & say the Australian public is exposed. Not only is deployable integrated air & missile defence capability an issue, as is protection of bases but so is protection of key civilian infrastructure. Whilst it must be acknowledged that some of these projects would be classified, the Integrated Investment Program associated with the National Defence Strategy release appeared to reduce IAMD funding. This is another example of pressure on the IIP. Greater investment is needed. 5.7B over the Forward Estimates given the potential threat is not enough. It is however incorrect to say that 38% of the Defence budget is for nuclear-powered submarines. 38% of the IIP (a subset of the budget) is apportioned to the maritime domain (which includes all capabilities for the maritime domain). Extra money has actually been given for AUKUS Pillar 1. Military ‘exposed to missile threats’ https://lnkd.in/gncthqEy

Digital and Social domains are more of a battleground than people are aware of. Massive social media campaigns can increase mindshare exponentially. In countries where social media is overwhelmingly the main source of news and information, this can sway public opinion quickly! NATO seeks to confront the growing ‘pressure of hybrid war’ to include the digital and social domains: https://ow.ly/VM1130sF6tF

In a second piece for the Australian Defence Supplement for #LandForces2024 I address the looming capabality gap in terms of an absence of Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD), and consider the role of Army in operating land-based interceptor missiles to provide 'teeth' for the AIR 6500 Battle Management System. The 2023 DSR identified the absence of credible IAMD as a key capability gap that needs to be urgently addressed. Yet the 2024 IIP still kicks the can down the road to the 2026 IIP, such that IOC of any system acquired is likely to be pushed into the mid 2030s at the earliest. This is in spite of there being operationally mature interceptor systems available right now, that if acquired quickly could close this gap in a couple of years. This decision by Defence is quite baffling. It is absolutely vital that Australia be able to defend its critical northern infrastructure from ballistic and cruise missile threats, hypersonic threats and long-range drones. The current approach of government appears to be to 'hope' that air and naval forces can be cobbled together in the right place at the right time to defend against a limited strike. But in future protracted war, especially against #China, such a strategy of hope is a path to failure. Its time for government to take the advice of the DSR authors, and get serious about land-based IAMD. https://lnkd.in/gxekNk75

Adversaries Increasingly Weaponizing Social Media Social media has made it easy for adversaries to target and influence the American people, a panel of experts said. “The primary thing it did was it removed our borders,” said Lydia Snider, a foreign malign influence adviser for Army Cyber Command. “Until the advent of social media, we had the luxury of oceans on either side and allies above and below.” Read more at https://loom.ly/T7yWC0I #ausa #ausaorg #army #usarmy #armycyber
