The AI industry and the disinformation ecosystem are set to experience a seismic shock in 2024 as they (very) publicly collide during election year. Although dis/misinfo tactics and technical responses to identify and address them have been honed across multiple geographies, conflict areas and election cycles by many state and non-state actors, their prevalence in the globally significant elections in the US, UK, Pakistan, Iran, Russia, Mexico, German States Elections (AFD) and Bangladesh (among many others) within the next 12 months will push them into the forefront of the media and public attention. I'm not a massive prediction fan, but January 2025 is going to look completely and entirely different from January 2024 in tech, regulation, AI and political circles. This is alarming: AI is now resurrecting long-dead political leaders. A former ruler of Indonesia, Suharto, recently posted a video encouraging Indonesians to vote in their election. It racked up more than 5 million views on X. The problem is, Suharto has been dead for 15 years. Thankfully, the creators of the video used it to encourage voting. But imagine if they’d decided instead to endorse a particular candidate? It’s not hard to imagine videos like these creating major waves in 2024, a year in which countries making up 49% of the global population will be holding elections.
