National Parents' Day is this Sunday! At RVO Health, we're proud to support our employees in their parenting journeys through our Paid Bonding Leave policy. This policy ensures that parents can take the necessary time off work to welcome and care for their newborn or newly adopted child, without the added stress of financial concern.
On Sunday, and every day, we celebrate all parents and their irreplaceable role in nurturing the next generation. Their dedication, love, and hard work inspire us daily. Want to see the real impact of our Paid Bonding Leave? Check out the gallery featuring heartwarming stories from RVO Health parents who've experienced this benefit firsthand.

Day 17: The Value of Life Story Work in Aged Care
Life story work is a beautiful way to honor and understand our residents' pasts. It involves learning about their history, experiences, and what brings them joy. How do you incorporate life story work in your care practices, and what impact has it had? Share your stories and insights. 📖

Older adults always light up when they receive visitors!
In this little clip I share 3 tips to consider when visiting a loved one in residential care:
1. It matters to them - I have done hundreds of OT assessments and we ask a question “if you had one wish what would it be” and nine times out of ten it relates to family. Residents often use family visits to orientate their week eg “two sleeps until the weekend when my family comes”. If it’s hard to visit, consider other means like a phone call or FaceTime. Or post a letter, include some photos or art work from your kids - if you look in a resident’s basket in their walker, there are often cards from their family, they carry them with them wherever they go.
2. Bring something in to do together if it’s becoming harder to have a conversation - short stories, a poem, old photos / postcards, a simple game. You could also have a meal together or join in on an activity from the lifestyle program. You can try to let the site know when you are coming so they will have your loved one ready in a wheelchair so you could take them for a tour of the garden if they can’t walk far.
3. Ask staff when unsure - sometimes we have family and friend who cannot visit as often so don’t feel confident in how to visit / interact with their loved one. Staff can help to have your loved one sitting up in bed or escorted to a sitting room. Staff may be available to spend a few moments to model how to interact eg what volume to speak at, how to position yourself so they can see / hear you properly. Consider visiting during a meal time - residents and their table mates often love having new people to talk to!
Just 3 of many tips!! What are your top tips?

Age often brings changes in physical health and capabilities, but it doesn't automatically equate to dependence. Whether age leads to dependence largely depends on individual circumstances, health conditions, and support systems in place.
While some older adults may require assistance due to health issues or mobility challenges, many maintain independence and actively engage in their communities.
At Homewatch CareGivers of Sterling, we believe in supporting independence and quality of life for seniors through personalized care and companionship. We help individuals maintain their autonomy while offering necessary support tailored to their needs and preferences.
