A scenario took quite time while investigating ground zero- where certain services (trigger themselves basis events) will start/activate for no reason. When say 'no reason', it means reason was not pretty clear with team and even the log set is silent. Question: Why there are no logs referring the events which triggered the activation/start of certain service ? - Probably the logging is not even enabled. We checked syslog, service specific logs, journal. Preventive and Detective Measures - Lessons Learnt: 1. Document all the services, triggers, state of services carefully with timestamps. 2. Review of log management is much needed. To note: Updates and patches are in place, no suspicious traffic seen, no EDR events visible. System was in use for a long time, no issues. #crowdstrike #cyber_security incident main factors that show breach in proper #change_management process: - Performing proper #testing before upgrade should protect against such incident. - #Rollback plan should be in place, return to older version in a timely manner reduce the huge bad effect that has happened. - #Disaster_recovery and #Business_continuity was not addressed. Updates for incident reporting would bring some details on what was the practise of these factors before upgrade and during fixing the casr, however if these factors were properly in place, then issue should not happen or should not remain that long to be fixed.
