BUILT TO LAST: A 150-YEAR SINGAPORE LAW PRACTICE Yes, Donaldson & Burkinshaw will be 150 years in existence in 2024, making it Singapore’s longest surviving independent law firm to date, witnessing the evolution of a former British colony to a sovereign nation soon to be under 4G leadership. What does not change over the many seasons is the firm’s unwavering commitment to serve its clients and the law to the best of its ability, in the best interests of its clients and the wider community, by preserving the best traditions of the Bar while constantly adapting to new norms. This is the firm’s built-to-last DNA. Of course, the firm’s story is incomplete without mention of the loyal and dedicated people who make up the firm, the many foreign and domestic clients who stick with the firm through thick and thin, and the firm’s strategic partners and network of friends within and without the legal profession whose goodwill give it strength. To each and everyone of them, the firm owes a debt of gratitude. Recently, I've received a number of enquiries about the news that A&O Shearman is closing their Johannesburg office. Many have asked, "are you being flooded with calls from A&O Shearman lawyers?" and “what are my thoughts on this announcement?” To avoid getting into sensitive details, here are my high-level thoughts: Firstly, I haven’t been inundated by lawyers from A&O Shearman, nor do I intend actively reaching out to them. The lawyers in their Johannesburg office are highly skilled professionals who will undoubtedly be in demand. These are top-tier practitioners. Being part of a Magic Circle firm is no small feat—it’s a testament to their talent and expertise. I imagine many of them are already in discussions with other firms, and moving together as a team will likely be more beneficial for both the destination firm and the individuals involved, than if they were picked off individually. In all likelihood, the team(s) will find a new home together and, as with any transition, they’ll experience a honeymoon phase as they adjust to their new environment. However, integrating a group of professionals into a new firm comes with challenges. Typically, law firms conduct extensive interviews and due diligence before appointing partners and their respective teams, a process that can take months. Having been involved in numerous partner appointments before, I can say that these moves often take six months or more to complete (excluding any notice periods). In some cases, for international firms, it’s not unusual for the process to take 12 to 18 months. However, with this closure, the process will likely be accelerated, and the acquiring firms may not be able to apply the same level of scrutiny and due diligence as they normally would. The individuals, too, may feel a certain pressure to accept the first viable option that presents itself. I sincerely hope they find firms that align with their values, team culture, and overall ethos. That said, it's unrealistic to expect a perfect match for everyone. It’s not a reflection on the individuals or the acquiring firms—it's simply human nature. That being said, the South African legal market is robust, with excellent local and international firms operating in the region. The A&O Shearman lawyers will be fine, and so will our local legal landscape. In fact, I’m feeling quite optimistic about South Africa at the moment. If the economy continues to show signs of improvement, as early indicators suggest, we could see law firms expanding aggressively in the near future. In short, while this development is significant (and I wouldn’t be surprised if one other international firm closes shop in the coming months), I believe the impacted individuals and the local market is well-positioned to navigate it successfully.
