On 18 August, memorial services were held across the country to commemorate 58 years since the Battle of Long Tan and Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. RSL WA Chief Executive Officer Stephen Barton, representing the State President Duncan Anderson, GAICD, attended the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Kings Park. The memorial service recognised the service and sacrifice of Australian personnel in one of our longest wars. Whatever the divisions at home, Australian servicemen and women did as their country asked them to do, serving with courage, endurance and humility. C.E.W Bean ended his Official History of the First World War with a reflection on the First AIF, "What these men did nothing can alter now... It rises, as it will always rise, above the mists of ages, a monument to great-hearted men; and for their nation a possession forever." The same can be said of the Australian men and women who served in Vietnam. The legacy of our Vietnam veterans is also found in RSL WA Sub-Branches across Western Australia, providing fellowship, camaraderie and advocacy for decades. It is also timely to reflect that not all Vietnam veterans felt welcomed by the RSL on their return home. RSL WA reaffirms that we stand for and welcome all veterans and their families, no matter the length or nature of their service.

Today I recognize (and I ask you to join me in recognizing) National Vietnam War Veterans Day – observed every year on March 29th. The United States Vietnam War Commemoration (VWC) was authorized by Congress, established under the Secretary of Defense, and launched by President Obama in 2012. The purpose of the VWC is to thank and honor our Vietnam veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the nation, with distinct recognition of former prisoners of war and families of those still listed as missing in action. Today we THANK, HONOR, and RECOGNIZE our nation’s Vietnam veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice. There are five objectives with Vietnam Commemoration and the other four are: · Highlight the service of our Armed Forces and support organizations during the war. · Pay tribute to wartime contributions at home by American citizens. · Highlight technology, science, and medical advances made during the war. · Recognize contributions by our Allies. Today we recognize the service and sacrifices of those U.S. Armed Forces personnel who served between November 1, 1955, and May 15, 1975, regardless of location of service which includes: · Nine million Americans serving during that time. · 6.4 million Americans living today. · 2.7 million U.S. service members who served in Vietnam. · More than 58,000 whose names are memorialized on a black granite wall in our Nation’s capital. · More than 304,000 who were wounded. · More than 1,200 Missing in Action (MIA) heroes who have not yet returned to American soil. · The more than 2,500 who were Prisoners of War (POWs) The commemoration makes no distinction between veterans who served in-county, in-theater, or were stationed elsewhere during those 20 years. #VietnamWarVeterans #VietnamWar #veterans #POWMIA #service #sacrifice #honor #UntilTheyAllComeHome

"The issue of exemption from mandatory military service for specific sectors of society, while other sections, including the Modern Orthodox, has created increasing hostility towards the ultra-Orthodox, which appear, especially now, to be evading their civic duty. The reality is approaching a boiling point and requires courageous leadership from both sides. We have been in the midst of the longest and most difficult war in Israel's history for nearly six months. A war whose end is not near, but predictions, which I hope will not come true, say that it will only get worse. This is a war in which hundreds of thousands of Israelis, reservists, left their homes with short notice and have served for close to five months, some longer. Now, most of those who have already been released are beginning to receive orders for additional reserve service. This load hits the reservists in all aspects, through their ability to support their families, Israel's economy, financial stability, and more." Read today's "View From Jerusalem" written by Leah Garber, senior vice president of JCC Association of North America and director of our Center for Israel Engagement in Jerusalem.

Did you know that Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I? The Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919 officially ending World War I. However the battles ended seven months prior when the Allies and Germany put an armistice into effect on the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month! #RepublicServicesVALOR10 #VeteransDay #RepublicServices #SustainabilityInAction

VP (Victory in the Pacific) Day, also known as VJ (Victory over Japan) Day, is celebrated on 15 August. This significant date marks Japan’s acceptance of the Allied Nations' demand for unconditional surrender on 14 August 1945. The following day, Australia's Prime Minister, Ben Chifley, announced that the war was over, bringing an end to the Second World War for Australians. World War II holds a significant place in Australia's history, with nearly 1 million Australians serving in the armed forces during the conflict. It was the first time since European settlement that Australia came under direct attack. On VP Day, we remember Australia's war efforts from 1942 to 1945 in the Pacific region, including campaigns in Singapore, Borneo, Malaya, Papua, New Guinea, and New Britain. It was a time when Australians worked hard and stood together to defend the nation. We also take this day to commemorate the sacrifices made by those who served in the war. Sadly, 40,000 Australians did not return home to their families, with over 17,000 losing their lives while fighting against Japan. Among them, some 8,000 perished in Japanese captivity. #RememberTheFallen #WWII #RememberThem #HonourTheirService #NeverForget #Military #ADF #Defence #Veterans #VeteranFamilies #MilitaryFamilies #DefenceFamilies #OnesLeftBehind #LestWeForget
