Today, in my Management of Cybersecurity (COMM 338) lecture, we reviewed the importance of Privileged Access Management in a business IT environment. Given that October is cyber security awareness month in Canada, I wanted to bring attention to this key issue: According to CyberArk, nowadays, "Nearly 100% of advanced attacks rely on the exploitation of privileged credentials." Given the importance of privileged accounts in an IT environment, businesses must adhere to the principle of least privilege, that is, giving only the necessary access required to perform a job's function. Privileged Access Management poses several challenges to organizations such as tracking the activity of privileged accounts and protecting Windows domain controllers in the face of Kerberos vulnerabilities. Therefore, it is important to not only adhere to the principle of least privileged, but also to implement best practices such as controlling and securing privileged accounts, limiting lateral movement, and securing SaaS and Cloud Infrastructure accounts/keys.
