After four interesting election days, there is a new #EuropeanParliament who will officially start their work on 16th July in Strasbourg. They will have a packed agenda, but the European endocrine community urges the European Parliament and all its members to continue the good work of the previous Parliament in the area of health and environment. The challenges in this area are numerous and real and become more pressing every day. At this critical time, we are looking forward to continuing to combine our efforts and work together with all the previous and new members towards a healthier, less toxic environment - for the benefit of current and future generations. #BecauseHormonesMatter

🗳️EUPHA calls to vote 🗳️ "The links between democracy and public health are undeniable. The right to vote and public participation ‘lies at the core of democratic government’. If voting is the vital link between health and politics, then without active participation in the electoral process, this link will be broken. It is imperative that, by voting, we maintain and strengthen this crucial connection. Starting today and for the next three days, every European citizen has the right to vote. However, not everyone who can vote does so. Voting is more than a civic duty; it is a powerful means to advance public health objectives and narrow inequalities. By participating actively in the electoral process, citizens can shape public policy and determine who will be responsible for safeguarding the health and well-being of us all." 👇 Read the full statement written jointly by EUPHAnxt (Monica Georgiana Brînzac Teresa Calandri) the Law and Public Health section (Amandine Garde, Nikhil Gokani) and the Public health policy and politics section (Sofia Ribeiro, MD MScPH MA MAM MBA, Damir Ivanković, Rana Orhan Pees). We call every citizen to head to the polls and cast your vote for the next members of parliament - and vote for Health! We all have the opportunity to make a difference. Very interesting (and thorough) analysis of political manifestos for the upcoming elections and their health policy promises (or lack of). One might be tempted to conclude that the big political groupings do not see Health as a vote-winning issue. But read the analysis and the manifestos and join the debate...
🚨Read EPHA's critical analysis of health policy promises in all EU parties' manifestos! #UseYourVote The upcoming European elections will be decisive for the future of the European Union and its plans in facing and addressing the growing global challenges. EPHA carried out an analysis of political parties’ manifestos to identify their plans and ambitions related to (public) health, especially in relation to the growing environmental challenges. The conclusions of this work will help inform the voters on how their voice matters, especially over decisions that will actually impact their lives, when it comes to equity, health, climate, and environment. The analysis also shows potential gaps on public health related topics within the next parliamentary mandate. The manifestos analysed include the European People's Party, the Party of European Socialists (PES), ALDE Party, the European Greens Party and The European Left. 🔗Read more! https://lnkd.in/eZPhMJJZ

*Health at a crossroads: future of the European Union hangs in the balance* by The Lancet. "This is a defining moment for public health in the EU. The decisions made by this newly elected Parliament will either propel us towards a healthier, more united Europe or set us back, jeopardising the wellbeing of millions. The stakes could not be higher. Health is at a crossroads, and every eligible EU citizen must take responsibility for the future of their continent by actively participating in elections. A 51% voter turnout is discouraging and highlights the need for greater civic engagement. In democratic societies, voting is both a right and a responsibility." https://lnkd.in/eC4gwatW

Given that it’s manifesto week, and todays release in particular seems to believe in fantasy economics, it’s worth considering another of the real world challenges we face in Health & Social Care. An aging population places ever greater strain on the NHS and social care, and as scientific advances mean more of us could live longer, our current system requires significant investment and, in some cases, major change to be able to cope. Social Care in particular has been neglected by successive governments with carers bearing the brunt of this decay, both in the sacrifices expected and the lack of support available. Add to this staffing shortages in health care professions and a lack of any coherent end-to-end view of community health care, and the level of stress on the system inevitably leads to a growing number of crisis situations faced by the NHS. The Nuffield Trust are setting out a range of needs for the health care system from the next government, and ways to evaluate the promises made by parties, which I’d highly recommend as a guide to understanding a viable way forward. https://lnkd.in/eHTZq8Xq
