'Including NATO security guarantees in a peace deal, rather than establishing them separately, would make it harder for Putin to convince Russians that they pose a threat to Russia’s national security' write Roger Myerson, Timothy Mylovanov and Konstantin Sonin in the latest RUSI Newsbrief.
Unforutately this will not happen until NATO leaders stop acting in their own self interests and instead move to protect others. The current situation, with Russian agents attacking NATO nations and still no action demonstrates a lack of moral courage and willingness to hit back.
We have seen over two years of NATO standing on the sidelines and drip feeding Ukraine support; had NATO moved quickly, Russia would have backed away due to the fear of actually meeting a peer to peer fighting force. Ukraine has demonstrated Russian forces are not the "Beast from the East" that we were all told about; rather there is a thin red front line that is very brittle once smashed through. Yet still inaction and moral failure from NATO encourages Russia to continue to drag the war on, while also building a new "Axis of Evil".

NATO to unveil Ukraine security package as ‘bridge’ to membership
NATO plans to offer Ukraine a security package when the alliance convenes its annual summit this summer in Washington, though it’s expected to stop short of accepting the nation’s long-standing request for membership amid Russia’s invasion. In addition to unveiling the package in July, an estimated 32 countries are finalizing a series of bilateral agreements to support...
👉 “If the G7 tells Ukraine that for this Russian aggression, we respond by supplying weapons, and for the next one we’ll also stand with you, plus you’ll join NATO, it means an invitation is coming at the Washington summit. Otherwise, it’s a total Western failure. Not inviting Ukraine into NATO means the US signaling it won’t defend Taiwan either,” - Oleksandr Kraiev
🔎 Oleksandr Kraiev, Director of the North America Program, analyzes in a Euromaidan Press article the recently signed security agreement between the United Kingdom and Ukraine, examining its impact on the country's security and Euro-Atlantic integration.

We live in dangerous times and NATO needs to stand firm as a bastion against Russian aggression.
But that means a strong, capable, determined NATO that shows by word and deed that it is united and prepared to act as a unified bloc against Putin’s aggression.
All NATO nations need to step up to the plate. In the past, the alliance has been plagued by the too-liberal use of National Caveats, which allow troop contributing nations to limit their involvement in operations. Historically, this has left a small core to do the heavy lifting (those activities with the highest costs in blood and treasure) while others restrict their contributions to the less risky peace-keeping tasks.
In the face of Russian aggression the use of National Caveats makes the alliance look weak and disjointed.
The final communique from Washington should include a “cast iron” commitment that the caveats system will be discontinued for as long as Putin poses a threat.
🗣 Jeffrey Sachs Exposes US Role in Igniting Ukraine Conflict: Ignored Warnings, Secret Coup, and Broken Peace Deals
👉 Bush's promise to bring Ukraine into NATO ignites a major standoff with Russia.
👉 Putin warns against NATO expansion, but US neocons dismiss his concerns, believing in US dominance.
👉 In 2014, the US supports an uprising that overthrows Ukraine's neutral-leaning president, starting the current conflict.
👉 Minsk agreements for Donbass autonomy are signed but not honored, with the US and Germany admitting they used the time to bolster Ukraine.
👉 The US ramps up military support for Ukraine, ignoring Russia’s 2021 proposal for a security agreement and fueling further tensions.

How high can interest rates go in Russia? Keep the pressure here.
Also:
- Can China afford Russia's oil amidst a devaluing yuan, potentially on a very accelerated basis in the near future?
- Can China afford to primarily support Russia's relative isolation in the world amidst the structural crises it is facing with localized debt burdens, a weakened housing market, and an aging population?
- Are the US and Europe planning sufficiently not only for energy independence but also for currency swings?
Cheers.🥂

How to #win the war in #Ukraine - #Foodforthought and a good plan 👉
✌ We should provide the weapons that Ukraine needs and lift restrictions on its use because Ukraine is fighting for self-defense.
✌ We should help Ukraine by protecting civilians, cities, civilian infrastructure, and economic sources of production. There’s no reason we cannot also help Ukraine directly with air defense.
✌ We need to see that economic recovery and economic development are part of the strategy for victory.
✌ NATO membership for Ukraine is also part of the strategy for victory. We have to make sure that Ukraine gets an invitation to join NATO as soon as possible.
✌ NATO can make a commitment to Ukraine, but also a public statement that would be read by Russia, that we would help defend Ukrainian territory that Ukraine controls.

2moNATO membership of Ukraine would be more useful.
