Why do some Limited Partners choose to reinvest or not in VC funds? They rarely reveal their decision-making rationale. By David Weisburd from 10X Capital Podcast Ultimately, LPs are primarily concerned with a fund's ability to deliver Distributed Paid in Capital (DPI), but savvy LPs recognize that DPI is a lagging indicator and seek leading indicators of success, such as Alpha. Alpha denotes returns achieved without added risk. It's the strategic edge that distinguishes top-tier funds. Alpha originates from superior capabilities in 3 key areas: Sourcing, Picking, and Winning. Sourcing entails accessing high-quality deal flow abundantly. Picking involves identifying winners early, often before others recognize their potential. Winning is crucial, particularly in later stages, as top funds vie for deals fiercely. Ultimately, Alpha hinges on unfair advantages and systemic edges unique to each manager. It's these advantages that sustain Alpha, making it a cornerstone of LP decision-making in VC investment decisions.
