Great summary of Paul Polman's fireside chat this week at ChangeNOW on leading impact from the #boardroom by Elvire Regnier. here are the key take-aways with my added comments 👇 1️⃣ Ensure true diversity in your #board: not only gender diversity, but also in terms of backgrounds, experiences, geographies I would add, "as long as this diversity is relevant for your current and future strategy". And even then, consider pushing a little bit further so as to ensure a wide perspective on major topics. 2️⃣ Ensure that the board stays up-to-date (and relevant) on most topics. This begs for continuous board training. Remember that the board is ultimately responsible for validating the company's strategy and supervising its execution. The boards can't be fed with an incomprehensible strategy on environment, AI, or changing consumer habits. Therefore it is the board's and the board members' responsibility to continue its training, including on governance and self-evaluation. 3️⃣ Be courageous and "walk the talk". The board is to live up to the stated values and company's purpose. This translate into its decision-making, notably on difficult topics. To rely on Olivier Sibony's famous corporate bias-busting book, you never know whether you are taking good decisions, but you can ensure that you have a good decision-making process. So own the resulting decisions. 4️⃣ As regards #ESG issues, integrate them fully into the company strategy and do not treat them as an afterthought or a niche topic. Because they actually impact absolutely ALL your business activities. 5️⃣ #Collaborative approach is the way to go in front of systemic issues--nobody can do it alone. Collaboration can take many forms, and the board has to consider it for itself, to support the executive teams in doing so, and to instil the approach into the entire organization. Consumer demands for environmental responsibility and accountability can make or break a brand today. Recently having spoken to Tom Berry, former EVP Sustainability at Farfetch and former Head of Sustainability at Kimberly-Clark, he says that: “ESG is not just a compliance topic, proper understanding and expertise allows companies to utilise the changing consumer sentiment and legislative changes as opportunities rather than compliance requirements.” Boards are the stewards of long-term value and have an obligation to be bold in setting the strategy and embedding a culture that embraces sustainability and ESG and encourages innovation. Attending Paul Polman interview at the exceptional ChangeNOW event this past Tuesday in Paris (with the Eiffel tower in the background) was a remarkable experience, thank you Kevin Tayebaly for the opportunity, Monica de Virgiliis, chairwoman of Chapter Zero France for the invitation and Isabelle Grosmaitre for the fantastic facilitation. As a former member of Unilever it was enlightening to reconnect with his perspective on environmental and social matters. Throughout the interview, which predominantly centered on board dynamics, several key insights emerged, shedding light on the crucial role of diversity, training, and ethical leadership within corporate governance. Firstly, Paul Polman emphasized the significance of genuine diversity on boards, extending beyond gender representation to encompass a diverse range of backgrounds and perspectives. He illustrated this by recounting Unilever’s transformation, where the introduction of members from Africa and the Middle East diversified a board initially composed of British and Dutch individuals. Additionally, he stressed the necessity of continuous board training, highlighting Unilever’s practice of conducting training sessions preceding each board meeting. This emphasis on continuous learning ensured that board members remained well-equipped to navigate complex challenges effectively. Yesterday, I had a great conversation with Sonali Anderson, who was a fellow awardee at this year’s New England Women in Energy and the Environment (NEWIEE) Gala. It seems like every organization is touting their climate and DEI credentials lately, and we talked about how to determine whether companies are truly walking the talk. Here are two of the main points from our conversation: First, assess the company’s key performance indicators: What metrics and outcomes are they working toward? Is GHG reduction their main goal? Or financial growth? Do they have company-wide equity goals for both how they operate and the impact they generate? If so, how are they tracking on those? Knowing the answers to these questions tells you what is really at the heart of the organization and what will drive their decision making. Second, assess the company’s culture: What is their employee net promoter score and how has it changed over the past few years? How long have they been working on DEI? How are they putting their DEI commitments into practice? Do they have a DEI committee, culture committee, or employee resource groups to support their team members? What’s the average tenure of their staff and what percentage of employees are promoted into new roles annually? Having these answers tells you what it's like to work at--or work with--an organization and how they operate day to day. I'm happy to say VEIC has great answers to all of these questions and I'm proud of the work that we have done as an organization to get where we are today. There's still a lot of work to do, but we're on the right path. Thanks to NEWIEE for bringing us together and sparking a great conversation!

I fear companies slipping back solely into compliance mode..... Thanks for sharing this Heikki Otsolampi, and again for the chat. So much of the progress made in sustainability recently has been driven by the opportunity for business growth and innovation through tackling critical environmental and social issues or needs. I know how important compliance and regulation can be (in particular to ensure a level playing field and push the laggards into action) but companies should be wary of investing all their sustainability-change makers time in 'just' complying (and use tech solutions like Compare Ethics, who I'm working with, that make compliance simple, scalable and really cost-effective). Boards should push for a focus on sustainability opportunity AND compliance, and understand the nuances of each to do so effectively...
