I wanted to take a moment to share some insights I've gathered over the years, particularly concerning the transition from military to civilian life and the unique challenges it presents. One of the key aspects I've found crucial in navigating military transition successfully is having mentors and leaders who understand both worlds fluently. They can bridge the gap and provide invaluable guidance on career progression and professional development. In the military, certain behaviors and attitudes are not only acceptable but often encouraged, whereas in the civilian world, they may lead to adverse consequences, including termination or hindered career advancement. I experienced this firsthand in my transition period from the Marine Corps. Fortunately, early in my civilian career, I received invaluable advice from one of the partners of the firm I worked at who recognized my potential but also understood the need for adaptation. They emphasized that while my military background was commendable, it wouldn't necessarily propel me to the heights I aspired to reach in the corporate world. Their wisdom led me to invest in personal development, including working with a life coach. It was a humbling experience, but one that has paid dividends ever since. There are a lot of Veterans that are too proud to open up and listen or have an attitude “they just don’t understand”. I firmly believe that fostering mentorship relationships between individuals with military and civilian backgrounds can greatly benefit both parties. Veterans bring unique skills, experiences, and perspectives that can enrich any organization, while civilian mentors provide guidance on navigating corporate cultures and advancing professionally. I think having Veterans in key leadership roles can help organizations be “Veteran Ready” by bridging the gap. They can talk to the new Veterans in the organization with an “I understand your perspective” but if you're open let me share the other side and let me help you navigate these waters to help you achieve what you are capable of. I'm grateful for the mentorship I've received, and I'm committed to paying it forward by offering support and guidance to others making similar transitions. This is just my perspective on the topic and as always open to connecting to support all Veterans.
