We lost her. This was the news I had to deliver to a client last week about a promising mid-level engineer they wanted to hire. She had 3 offers on the table and ended up choosing the one that offered a slightly lower salary and wanted her to go into the office three days a week. Her reasoning; - She had a level of salary that she was happy at and offers above that level did not really have much of a further impact on her decision-making - She knew some of the developers already working there and enjoyed spending time with them. Having an office to go to means there will be more chances to socialise both at work and outside it with the team - As someone who still considers herself relatively junior, she feels her learning would be accelerated by spending time with more experienced people in person. Why am I posting about one that didn’t work out for us or our client? Because there is an important lesson to be had here. If you spend any time on LinkedIn you would assume from all the sh*t posting about companies that want to bring people together in an office that this is a completely flawed strategy and will completely negate their efforts to hire great people. You would also conclude that offering more money will give you a massive advantage. As a recruiter who spends all day every day speaking to people about their job search, I have found that while both of those things are sometimes true there is no silver bullet when it comes to hiring great people. What does consistently work well and never goes out of style is treating people as individuals and engaging with them to find out what they value and why.
