Yesterday I ended up explaining my PhD to 6-year-old children. It went something like this: Child 1: School is boring. Don't you agree [child 2] Me: Why is school boring? Child 1: Because teachers are always telling you what to do! Me: That's what my work used to be about. Helping teachers do that less, telling children what to do less. Child 1: Did they do it? Me: Well, it was hard because teachers don't do what they want either. They have other people telling them what to do. Headteachers tell them what to do. And the government tells headteachers what to do. Child 2: Who tells the government what to do? Child 1: The king. I want to be the king so I can tell everyone what to do. At this point we had to have a quick lesson on constitutional monarchy. Then one of the children said: "I was born on the same day as the king." Glad the important messages went in.

Peter Marshall, after he'd assumed the post of chaplain in the U.S. Senate in January of 1947, pointedly and prophetically stated: "The choice before us is plain; Christ or chaos, conviction or compromise, discipline or disintegration." Not much has fundamentally changed for our American government officials, citizens, and society in general - we're confronted with the same options.
