Sculptural engineering in Vancouver After years of eager waiting and careful design work, the Alberni by Kengo Kuma skyscraper has finally been finished in Vancouver. Created by the well-known architectural firm KENGO KUMA & ASSOCIATES and brought to life by Westbank Corp this impressive 43-story residential building stands as a symbol of the Japanese architect's inaugural venture into high-rise architecture in North America. This ambitious undertaking's completion highlights the harmonious blend of Japanese design principles with Vancouver's cityscape, resulting in a one-of-a-kind, artistic architectural landmark for the expanding Canadian metropolis. The twisting skyscraper begins with a small triangular base and gradually extends outward as it rises, gently cantilevering. This design permits the tower to gradually transition from its initial triangular form to an ideal rectangular shape, maximizing its livable floor area at the pinnacle. This aspect required complex work by Glotman Simpson Consulting Engineers’ structural engineers who made it possible to achieve the result The distinctive glass exterior of the tower resembles the intricate pattern of a beehive's honeycomb, creating a visually stunning appearance.
