Are these current health trends proven or nonsense? One of the biggest names in the healthspan space, Peter Attia, had his 300th podcast recently. He emphasized the importance of being able to change your mind based on the science and in that spirit he reviewed a bunch of popular topics through the lens of geroprotection (addresses aging and prolongs life). He then labeled them with the following system… Proven - well established data, enough that it would be foolish not to act on it (nothing is ever truly proven in biology) Promising - lots of data supporting it, but something is missing (maybe not enough human data, etc.). Fuzzy - some data around the claim, contradictory studies, more studies needed Noise - data is not sufficient but might be something else that is compelling about the idea, may be clinical situations where this is appropriate Nonsense - studied and nothing of substance All of these topics could easily move up and down the proven to nonsense chain as new science emerges Here is an overview of the topics and Peter’s assigned categories: #1 Geroprotective drugs Rapamycin - Promising Metformin - Fuzzy NAD (NMN/NR) - Noise Resveratrol - Nonsense #2 Exercise VO2 max - Proven Muscle strength - Proven Blood flow restriction - Promising Stem cells (for osteoarthritis) - noise #3 Nutrition Long term fasting (for longevity) - Fuzzy Energy balance theory - Promising to Proven Sugar is poison - Very nuanced conversation on this one, dependent on so many factors.
