As a patient with a degenerative disorder, we are used to my uncle being treated as a disposable or not worth intervention and quality care. Garrett was on when we arrived at the ICU and we immediately knew that he was different. He spent time with us listening to my uncle’s whole life story. He suggested measures to make my uncle comfortable and was incredibly attentive. The care with which he provided my uncle was really touching. When we told him my uncle becomes very overstimulated by multiple commands and a lot of touching and activity, he immediately took steps to slow down, communicate everything he did, and ask consent. Even though my uncle is nonverbal… we thank Garrett for everything he did. So many health care professionals treat him like a vegetable but Garrett treated him like a person with dignity."

I was privileged to be joined on a panel with Richard Sloggett, Catrin Treharne, and David Thorne at this year’s #NHSConfedExpo. We discussed how a greater focus on the wider value of disease control in long-term conditions (LTCs) could help improve patient experience and outcomes, which in turn has the potential to help release capacity in local systems. Thanks to all those who joined us – it was a great discussion, bringing clinical, ICB, and health economic perspectives to the issues and opportunities. With LTCs on the rise, it also underlined to me the scale of the impact that changing the way we approach their care could have at a national level. There are 25m people in England living with an LTC and 13.4m live with two or more. In a system under increasing pressure, and national policies which focus on a small sub-set of high-profile diseases, many living with LTCs struggle to access the joined-up and consistent care they need. All of which has an impact on people’s lives, NHS capacity and national economic productivity. Together with patient organisations representing those living with LTCs, AbbVie has co-signed an open letter urging whichever party forms the next government to put long-term conditions at the heart of NHS service delivery. We are calling for a holistic, multi-condition strategy that leaves no one and no disease behind. We are thrilled to share that we have contributed to a call to action to the German Ministry of Health, urging the government to take immediate action to enhance care for the nearly 4 million people living with heart failure in Germany. The letter is a result of this year’s national heart failure roundtable, initiated by Herzschwaeche Deutschland, and has been signed by leading patient representatives, cardiologists and nurse experts. It proposes critical actions, including: Ø ensuring that heart failure is fully incorporated into the upcoming German national cardiovascular strategy. Ø improving diagnosis through targeted training, routine use of risk questionnaires in primary care, and the inclusion of NP testing in national health checks. Ø urgently investing in heart failure specialist nurses and allied professions to bridge gaps in care due to shortages of trained staff. Ø accelerating roll-out of the disease management programme for heart failure, which has suffered from significant delays, jeopardising quality HF care. These actions are pivotal for the German health system to provide optimal care and respond to the rising prevalence of heart failure. Access to care in rural communities is a critical issue that significantly impacts the health and well-being of millions of people. Improving access to care in these areas is essential for reducing health disparities, managing chronic conditions, and ensuring that rural populations receive both preventive care and timely treatment for acute health issues, like CAD. Addressing this challenge requires innovative solutions, incentives for healthcare professionals to practice in rural settings as well as access to new tools and technology, such as the CADScor® System, to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their geographic location, have equitable access to essential health services.
Eddie Smith went straight to the hospital near his eastern Kentucky home when he had chest pain. His father had died of a heart attack, and Eddie had been previously diagnosed with a leaky heart valve. But many people in his family have gone almost their entire lives without seeing a doctor, he says. Because of Appalachia’s mountainous geography and winding two-lane roads, a 20-mile drive to the nearest hospital or medical facility might take an hour. "It's just too much of a drive, too far away, too much of an inconvenience. All of a sudden, they die of something that could have been taken care of." Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Kentucky. The state ranks in the top 10 in heart disease and diabetes mortality rates. About 16.5% of the population experiences poverty. Those are a lot of obstacles to overcome, but health care providers and state and local governments are determined to improve access to health care in rural Kentucky. To improve access to care in rural areas, UK HealthCare's Gill Heart & Vascular Institute established an affiliate network to collaborate with hospitals throughout the state and help recruit more doctors to rural communities. A law passed in 2002 allows hospitals to become certified as comprehensive cardiac centers, primary heart attack centers or acute heart attack-ready hospitals, so that first responders know where to take a patient for the best, fastest care. Eddie, now 73, had the motivation, the means and the opportunity to seek the best possible treatment. That’s the goal for everyone in eastern Kentucky and all of rural America. “Your health is a little more fragile than what you think. Take care of yourself,” Eddie says. “Regularly get your physical and your checkups. If you got a problem, go get it checked out. You're not going to live forever, but live as long as you can.”
