California Prop 12 became the law of the land on Jan 1st. It had stirred concerns across our industry over the last few years, yet here at Roli Roti, we faced it with confidence. I am from a family of butchers, I have a degree in farming, and over two decades as a meat industry entrepreneur. My entire life my commitment to top-notch farming standards has been a constant. The recent changes from Proposition 12 weren't a pivot for us; they were in line with the principles we've upheld since day one. Animal welfare is welfare standards are always on of the first parameters we look into when we create a new product – in fact we are also one of the first companies in partnership with the Better Chicken Commitment. While others navigate compliance, we want our industry colleagues to know that our food trucks, and our packaged goods, including pork hash, carnitas, and kalua pork, have always surpassed regulatory requirements. California's Proposition 12, an animal welfare ballot initiative, has caused a shift in the state's agricultural landscape and led to a significant impact on pork sales. On farm and feedlot handling practices have dramatic animal and financial impacts to the industry. From FO’s in the meat supply as mentioned causing consumer injuries resulting in lost consumer confidence and trust in our food supply. Not to mention one of my pet peeves! FYI - I’m going to go on a little rant about this, even though it wasn’t an intended focal point of the article. The loss of good animals by poor handling practices with injured or lame animals getting put on trucks resulting in downers or even DOA’s costing millions of dollars a year (yes Millions!). It roughly takes a year to retain and raise a heifer to breading age, then 9 months gestation, then ~24 months to finish a steer, to get it all the way to a packing plant and knock on the trailer because it can’t get up. Then the animals carcass gets sent to rendering or landfill. We need much better understanding of proper animal handling practices across the industry. Not that everyone is bad, but everyone can improve! Not everyone understands the impacts that poor handling practices have downstream or how they negatively hurt the reputation of the industry.

We rarely talk or think about the slaughterers. A meaningful sharing from an ex slaughterer who talk about Mr tel health and dissociation of death. When we practice mindfulness, we think about the connectedness of what we eat. Maybe you would like to try and think about your good choice. For your children for the environment-health and animal welfare.

Today we want to highlight one of the members of our board, Kris Musgrave. What part of the industry do you represent? I sit on the Colorado Beef Council’s (CBC) board, in the Processor/Marketer seat, and own Stagecoach Meat Company, LLC. However, my wife and I also have a small cow/calf operation and run a small livestock feeding facility. How did you get started in the industry? I grew up on a Corn and Wheat farm near Wiggins, CO. As part of our family operation, we also raised cattle until 2004, which started my passion for the beef industry. In 2011, my wife and I revamped the cattle production part of the operation, with a focus on direct-to-consumer beef sales. In 2020 we were presented with the opportunity to integrate processing into our operation with the procurement of Stagecoach Meat Company. This started our path into the processing industry. What is something you wish consumers knew about the production of beef in Colorado? As a producer and processor, I work hard to educate consumers on the commitment and pride of producers, as well as the care and passion that producers and processors have for our cattle. I want consumers to understand that beef is one of the most sustainable options for protein on the market. Beef cattle that are produced in Colorado are given the highest quality of life, and the same commitment to animal welfare carries all the way through the processing sector, preparing the beef for the end consumer. #beef #cobeef #beefitswhatsfordinner
