A busy week in the team with seven new roles brought to us by a variety of insurance businesses. Pricing remains a busy area of the market. If we look at the mix of roles that the London Market team worked on last year, just under 50% were pricing / portfolio management focussed. This trend has continued into 2024. Pricing has long been a popular option for Actuaries looking to get closer to the business, and with the increase in number of these roles being recruited (often brand new expansion hires), firms are more and more willing to consider people with a non-pricing background. I would be happy to discuss the current pricing roles we are working on (traditional case pricing in house, broker (re)insurance pricing, technology focussed pricing, plus others) with people who have worked within pricing, and those who have not. Perhaps you work within consultancy and would be more interested in a change from reserving / SAO type work, but were not sure about your options. Or maybe you are interested in understanding more about where the market is going from a data science pricing angle. Underwriting is not the processing of crammed policy contracts T&Cs or the blind rush to meet SLAs TATs, it is the #wisdom of #collaboration with multiple professionals and stakeholders on #risks that must be carefully assessed and managed for monetary retentions and/or balanced transfers for #financialprotection. Across financial services, job scope and pay levels have risen for the most senior back-office roles. Large insurance and financial services companies are prioritizing world-class talent in functions such as legal, finance, operations, and technology. Our Chris Connors is interviewed by Cheryl Winokur Munk for P&C Specialist about why Chief Underwriting Officers are underrepresented from the list of Named Executive Officers at large commercial insurance carriers. "As businesses have become more diversified and global, some of the non-revenue-generating roles at insurers and other large financial services companies have gotten significantly larger and you're seeing this manifest in proxies," said Chris Connors, a principal at compensation consulting firm Johnson Associates. Is attracting and retaining talent THE biggest challenge facing our industry in 2024? Mark Lomas, Chartered FCIPD, Head of Culture Lloyd's believes it is: "The insurance industry is still not one that young people aspire to career-wise—so the industry has a responsibility to change the narrative and tell compelling stories that will change perceptions and future-proof the industry." There is still work to be done in communicating the wide range of career opportunities available to young people entering the market. As technology evolves, the industry becomes more innovative. Innovation can create more job opportunities and we see this happening. Technological evolution has created far more roles in data science, integration, APIs, and connecting systems. The industry is calling for underwriters who are tech-savvy and want to work with technology, something the market didn't need 20 years ago.
