Reflecting on my third Empire State Ride in 2023, I stood at the finish line pondering the perennial question: "Will you do it next year?" Much like my responses in 2021 and 2022, uncertainty lingered, particularly after the challenges of the previous year. Yet, here we are, and on this Giving Tuesday, I share a story of resilience and purpose. Last year's ride emerged as the most challenging of my cycling journey. It wasn't the scorching heat of 2022 or the car incident of 2021, but Mother Nature's determination to make 2023 the ultimate test. Battling through brutal headwinds paled in comparison to the relentless rain—a story worth telling. Looking ahead to 2024, the tenth anniversary of the Empire State Ride beckons, and I feel a deep-seated compulsion to be part of it. In July, I embark on a seven-day, 500+ mile cycling journey across New York State to champion the cause of ending cancer. Beyond a mere bike ride, this is a collective effort, and on this Giving Tuesday, I extend an invitation to consider contributing to my mission. What if you cut some events? You’ll potentially increase your net profit percent in that budget year, but will cutting those events have other repercussions? In a word, yes.  The metric we’ve used to measure events is single year net revenue. Our event staff live and die on, “Did I meet net revenue goal?”  Net annual revenue. Nothing else matters. On June 23, 2020, we faced an unimaginable loss. Ade Ayodele, a vibrant sports executive, dedicated friend, and cherished member of the Ayodele family, passed away from colon cancer at just 31 years old. Determined to transform our grief into purpose, we channeled our energy into supporting the the V Foundation's Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund. In 2020 alone, we raised $100,000 to advance the understand the biological basis of cancer disparities. Through Facebook fundraisers, runs, and rides, our community united to prevent others from enduring similar heartache. These efforts have evolved into our annual Play for Ade golf tournament, celebrating Ade's passion for golf and mentorship. This year's event was especially memorable as my little 2-year-old Ade picked up a club for the first time, swinging in honor of his late uncle. Yet, our mission is far from complete. Too many young lives, like those of Stuart Scott, Chadwick Boseman, and Virgil Abloh, are cut short by cancer, and we don't know why. I am proud to announce that we donated another $5,000 this year, thanks to the unwavering support of our attendees, sponsors, and community. That was the seed, but we aim to double (or triple or quadruple) our impact again this year.
