Every year, the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), together with local communities and organisations raise awareness about cancer, educate and encourage action. The goal is for everyone across the globe to join forces to make life-saving cancer treatment accessible to everyone, regardless of where they're from, thus preventing the illness and millions of cancer deaths. There are many ways you can observe World Cancer Day:  💜Reach out to someone in your life who has been diagnosed. Support is one of the best things to help someone on their path to recovery.  💜Wear a ribbon to help spread awareness about cancer. Different colors represent different cancers, but lavender represents all cancers.  💜If you can, donate to a cancer charity or research organisation, and play a role in the attempt to develop a cure for this disease.  #worldcancerday #support

Day 5 of 100 press ups a day for Cancer Research UK. Videoing every single press up I do for this challenge is my way of keeping accountable to hitting the daily goal EVERY day. Sure it's a pain to set the iphone up for each set and then edit the footage... ...but I find myself much more inclined to do it. I think will power would have seen me through the first couple of days but may have let that slip. However, now that I have shared the videos on my Facebook profile, the Cancer Research 100 push up a day page and now here on LinkedIn... ...barring injury, there's now way I'm going to miss one single press up of the 2500 I have left to do this month. There's also a greater sense of achievement too. But back to the importance of the work Cancer Research UK do. On their website there's a very useful page that lists potential cancer symptoms. You'll find it here: https://lnkd.in/eb3BG8-4. It's worth taking a few minutes just to scan the page to familiarise yourself with those symptoms....just in case. Those who know me will know that I have a long-standing love/hate passion for running. By which I mean I like to occasionally run, stopping and starting throughout my 40 years of existence. But I've never really set myself a meaningful goal. Well, this year, I wanted to set myself a challenge. And a half marathon seemed like a good idea (I write that so that I can remind myself of it when I question what on earth I have done!). So, I've signed up for the Great North Run as part of Team Cancer Research UK (CRUK). Cancer has or will impact each and every one of us. Either directly, or because someone we care about receives the devastating news of a diagnosis. Cancer Research UK (CRUK) plays a critical role in improving the lives of those with, or who may eventually get that horrible news. Through the research into root causes, methods of diagnosis, and life-saving treatment, as well as the direct support they offer to individuals and families going through the heartache of cancer, Cancer Research does incredible things, every day. Survival rates have almost doubled in the last 40 years, but the diagnosis rate has almost quadrupled. So the work is far from nearly done. I want to play my part, no matter how small, in pushing forward that incredible achievement. Starting this week, the Norwegian Cancer Society will run its annual campaign, Innsamlingsaksjonen (formerly Krafttak mot kreft — Mobilizing against Cancer) — a funding drive for cancer research. My colleagues and I at Aker Horizons are proud to support this campaign, together with all the companies in the Aker family 🤝 We kick-started the campaign early this morning with the distribution of ☕ & 🍩 at our HQ. Staff and visitors were encouraged to donate any amount they wished - and so many did, and shared their own stories while there! 💛 Cancer is a disease that affects so many families, including our own here at Akerkvartalet. We understand the impact cancer can have on loved ones and are committed to making a solid effort in the fight against it. The funds raised from year’s campaign will go towards research focused on genetic testing that can be offered to cancer patients at an early stage, to help them get the most effective treatment available. Ahead of World Cancer Day, UK cancer charities and patients are joining us at Westminster in solidarity. Together we will speak up on behalf of the many thousands that have and are waiting too long for treatment. The facts around the 62-day cancer treatment target alone are dismal. ❌Target last met in England in 2015 ❌Target last met in Northern Ireland in 2009 ❌Target last met in Scotland in 2012 ❌Target last met in Wales 2010 This is despite the workforce going above and beyond for YEARS. A long term, dedicated cancer plan is what we need. Evidence is clear that countries with a plan do so much better for cancer patients. The message could not be more serious or more urgent, but we plan to meet in hope and positivity that things can change. Our humble thanks to all that can come along, and for sharing your stories with us over the past year. With cancer diagnoses on the rise there's more interest than ever in research that could make early detection easier. Read this very interesting post from our colleagues in Queen Mary Innovation: #cancer #earlydiagnosis

At the NHS, we want our patients to have the best experience possible and having continuous patient feedback is crucial in helping us to deliver what patients want and need. The national Cancer Patient Experience Survey (CPES) asks for feedback from cancer patients (16 years and over*), to inform and improve local cancer services across England. Those who were treated for cancer as an inpatient or day-case, and left hospital in April, May or June 2023, will be invited to take part in the survey. The NHS and cancer charities use the results to understand what is working well and which areas need improvement. The results enable them to identify national and local priorities and work with patients and partners to deliver change. The 2023 CPES fieldwork will begin in autumn 2023, with results available next year. "One person a minute in Britain will be diagnosed with cancer within a generation" predicts Cancer Research UK (CRUK) in The Times. But there's reason to hope, writes Rhys Blakely, and it's good to see how innovation features so prevalently among his list of reasons why. One #technology we're especially excited about is drug ranking using machine learning (DRUML). Invented by Pedro R. Cutillas, DRUML could revolutionise cancer treatment through offering truly personalised medicine. It could also streamline drug development by providing a new and better way to stratify patients at scale – thereby making it easier to select the responding patient cohort for a cancer clinical trial. Selecting the best drug for individual cancer patients is complicated. Cancer tumours differ dramatically from patient to patient, meaning that two people diagnosed with the same cancer may respond completely differently to the same therapy. It also makes it much harder to develop effective treatments; a consistent failure to accurately define the responsive patient cohort has led to a higher attrition rate in drug development. DRUML is a methodology for building and integrating machine learning models, using ensembles of proteomic, phosphoproteomic and transcriptomic features to generate lists of ranked drugs based on their efficacy. Alongside its clinical potential, the technology can also be used as a #research tool to narrow down who should participate in a drug trial by predicting whether individual patients are likely to be responsive.
