Across the board, Habitat's programs have exceeded goals and set new records this year. 💯💯💯 In 2023, our ReClaim program diverted 226,317 pounds of material from the landfill and reclaimed an estimated $150,878 worth of products. What's the impact of ReClaim? Instead of contributing to our waste stream, those materials were sold at affordable prices at the Habitat ReStore La Crosse. Instead of needing to purchase expensive, new products, our shoppers could save money on home improvement projects by choosing secondhand material. And best of all, the money we earn on ReClaim items directly supports our mission to provide and preserve affordable housing. It's a win-win-win. This #ShowYourStripesDay, we thought we'd take a moment to celebrate all the climate-based activities we run as a BID, together with Reading businesses, to positively impact the town centre. Did you know, we: 📦 Provide businesses with access to weekly recycling and carboard collection at no extra charge, making it simple for businesses to do their bit for the environment and reduce their contribution to landfill (collecting on average over 5 tonnes of cardboard every week!). 🖥️ Provide small electrical waste disposal, meaning less business waste going to landfill (2 tonnes per year). 🌺 Work with the council to brighten the public realm of Reading with wild flowering in 3 areas, enhancing the environment, while supporting Reading’s important wildlife, insects and pollinators. 🧤 Helped run the Winter Warmer event in January which encourages Reading businesses and their employees to recycle and donate unwanted clothing to charities working with people most in need. 🦆 Supported Canals and Rivers Trust in their mission to look after miles of waterways across England, by delivering a project to install reedbeds along the Kennet and Avon Canal in the centre of Reading. 🚮 Initiate regular litter picking activities for local businesses and their staff to get involved with and give back to the community. Our environmental initiatives are more than just a tick-box exercise – and the impact goes far beyond businesses’ front doors. Want to turn food scraps into soil gold and connect with eco-conscious neighbours? Starting a community composting group is the perfect recipe 🙌. ✅ Gather Your Green Champions: Spread the word through social media, and local events. Find allies at community gardens and farmers markets 💚. ✅ Find Your Fertile Ground: Secure a location – public parks, community centres, or even gardens can be compost havens. Check local regulations and permits 📝. ✅ Choose Your System: Consider budget, space, and ease of use. Straw bale stacks, wooden bins, or even repurposed plastic barrels can be used as composting bins (although our composting machines are of course the preferred option 😉) ✅ Share the Knowledge: Organise sessions to educate people on the benefits of and how to compost 🐛. ✅ Spread the Love: Partner with local businesses to collect food scraps. New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced budget cuts that, if enacted, will essentially wipe out #communitycomposting infrastructure in #NYC, as well as threaten widely used #foodwaste drop-off sites operated by GrowNYC at Greenmarkets throughout the city. “NYC has long been a leader not only in #composting, but community composting … that keeps the composting process and #compost use local, while offering community engagement and education opportunities,” according to Institute for Local Self-Reliance. ILSR’s 2022 Community Composter Census identified New York as home to the largest concentration of community composters in the U.S.—a thriving ecosystem of local businesses, environmental nonprofits, and neighborhood gardens. #climate

30% of food is wasted in the USA. It has taken decades to create composting infrastructure to keep organic yard wastes out of landfills. Now, community composters are the critical drivers in also getting food scraps out of the landfills. Building compost infrastructure isn’t a ‘sexy’ endeavor for politicians to advocate for. So, it’s important that we support it. Today, I tag Cleveland’s Mayor, Justin M. Bibb to express thanks for collaborating with Rust Belt Riders on expanding composting services here in Cleveland. We’ve seen a promising pilot program with the West Side Market! Now, please assist them in finally finding and launching a composting site. Compost facilities are a must-have in modern urban infrastructure. Short and long term support for small isolated systems at work here! Super important on many levels: ·       We know that many small systems are not financially or operationally sustainable. One key solution is to consolidate the small system into a nearby regional authority. A key challenge is who will bear the expenses of developing a consolidation analysis and plan.  ·       These small systems, mostly serving manufactured homes for Spanish-speaking families who work on farms, are falling in part and put these hardy people at risk. ·       Moonshot Missions is able through the #WaterTA program to provide support to prepare these systems for consolidation – evaluating engineering and governance issues. ·       Moonshot Missions also seeks to implement immediate steps to help secure clean water until consolidation can occur. A local community group with relationships in the region is essential – and we are blessed by the efforts of Pueblo Unido. Love this work by our #EFC West team, including Lydia Rossiter Reshet S. For those who didn't know, the Vancouver Landfill is opening its doors to the public tomorrow (Saturday June 8th 10AM - 2PM). As part of BCIT's Applied Circular Economy course, I had got a chance to go on a field trip to this landfill, and it was an eye-opening experience. The amount of work and planning that goes into operating this organization is beyond impressive! Being a Sustainable Design professional and LEED consultant, one of my roles is to guide construction teams on construction and demolition waste management practices. When a trip to the landfill is something you look forward to so you can inform yourself and your team more about how we can reduce waste and GHG emissions, you know you love what you do! If you want to see how methane from the landfill is captured to reduce GHG emissions, and have questions about commingled demolition waste separation, alternate daily cover, etc., don't miss out on this opportunity. The staff at the landfill are super-friendly and knowledgeable! Good News! "The money is in the next cycle of awards from a CalRecycle program established by SB 1383, which took effect Jan. 1, 2022. In addition to feeding the hungry, the goal is to reduce organic waste sent to landfills, where its decomposition contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. Oceanside’s water utilities, library, neighborhood services, and parks and recreation departments work together with the nonprofit Solana Center for Environmental Innovation on the program.
