It's neither one by itself. Despite all the money poured into both the what and the how, today's current TV experiences are falling short. Mattoo's attention to Tubi and a conversation with its CEO Anjali Sud is particularly enlightening. It turns out, Gen Z is responding to an older model of the experience that might make them remarkably Boomer-ish (surprise!). It turns out, you can unlock a wonderful way of experiencing modern TV with conventional interfaces. I don't agree with everything in here, nor do I have the same sense of "it was so much better in the past" nostalgia Mattoo invokes. After all, the phrase "500 channels and nothing is on" resonated for a reason. But I am here for her longing for a "a digital future for television that feels like it’s built by people, not a desolate machine-learning loop." Of course, this comes as no surprise, as the investment in Black TV shows continues to fade, not so long after a really loud proclamation that it wouldn't in 2020. Some will point to the fact that people watch shows that resemble themselves. I would certainly agree with the overall point there, as the data clearly shows that people, and Black people in particular, when looking at the Top 10 shows they watch on (analog) TV are (almost) exclusively shows led by people that look like them. However, just because Black people, or any people, like watching shows about stories that they have a personal affinity for, doesn't mean those shows cannot be invested in with development time, talented casts, properly-staffed crews, prolific shooting budgets, and worthwhile marketing allocations so that they may have a chance at resonating with others beyond the scope of their own demographics. That's why I kind of laugh when people say it's simply a "preference" thing, but as soon as you invest in a movie like "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever", you see that it makes the list of Top 10 streamed movies in 2023. So as we embark on a new year, come out of Sundance, and have on the horizon hundreds of TV shows set to debut in 2024, let us not forget, we get the TV landscape we invest in, which is ultimately the one we deserve.

It's easy to make a casual link between series reviews from professional critics and audience sizes, but often the link is tenuous at best and sometimes entirely absent. 📺 "Fool Me Once" on Netflix is a great example.
