Strategic Insights from HDC2024: The Hon Joel Fitzgibbon & H.E. The Hon Dr Kevin Rudd At HDC2024, H.E. The Hon Dr Kevin Rudd, Australia's Ambassador to the United States, emphasised the urgency of accelerating defence technology development, noting, “It takes about 12 years to get new technology into the hands of the warfighter; in China, this is two years. This is driving overall change.” The Hon. Joel Fitzgibbon GAICD, Former Minister for Defence, stressed the importance of strategic readiness: “Our region is changing... It’s important to maintain strategic balance – not so we can win a war but so we can prevent a war. Our only option is to be ready.” Rudd also highlighted the bipartisan support for AUKUS, ensuring that Australian industry, including SMEs, will play a crucial role in strengthening our defence capabilities. Fitzgibbon echoed the need for industry mobilisation, stating, "We need every human resource in the country engaged to ensure the success of AUKUS." På väg hem från Cyberförsvarsdagen, ett event arrangerat av SOFF, Försvarsmakten, MSB och FRA, där jag i närvaro av Kungahuset (H.M. Konungen, Kronprinsessan och Prins Carl Philip) talade om hur molntjänster hänger ihop med och kan stärka totalförsvaret. Kärnan i mitt budskap var att när vi nu återuppbygger totalförsvaret så sker det inte bara i en annan geopolitisk kontext utan även en annan samhällskontext än tidigare. Samhället har digitaliserats, som nation har vi förvisso aldrig varit isolerade från omvärlden men idag är vi beroende av digitala dataflöden för att både vårt näringsliv och våra samhällskritiska verksamheter ska kunna fungera, vara konkurrenskraftiga och möta medborgarnas behov. Föremålet för främmande makts offensiver är inte längre bara militära och statliga mål utan även direkt civila. Alltså måste det nya totalförsvaret spegla detta. Där behövs både molntjänster för att upprätthålla och utveckla verksamheter när resurser är begränsade och att kunna bygga ett mer effektivt cyberförsvar.
