As someone who has dedicated my personal and professional life to public service, diplomacy and furthering democracy, I unequivocally condemn the assassination attempt on the former US president. Such acts of violence undermine the very principles of democracy and justice that we stand for. It is also a stark reminder of those that have laid down their lives for this country, Dr. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, the civil rights matyrs, as well as the men and women who have served this country in its many wars including my father, a disabled Marine, my uncle, a disabled Vietnam veteran, and so many more. Democracy thrives on the peaceful exchange of ideas, the sanctity of the ballot, and the respect for the rule of law. When violence enters this equation, it threatens the principles that bind us as a nation. This attempted assassination of a political figure awakens my unwavering commitment to governance by and for the people and strong resilience in the face of such threats. In fact, violence, in all its forms, whether political, gender based, mass shootings, in the street, in the home, not only seeks to harm but also aims to instill fear, create division, and erode public and private trust. In moments like these, we must reaffirm our dedication to the principles of democracy, including the priority to protect our communities with appropriate gun control legislation ... protect human rights defenders both here and around the world ... protect civilians during war and conflict .... and the list goes on. We must stand united, regardless of political affiliations, in condemning ALL violent acts and ensure that justice is served. Our democracy is strongest when we protect the rights and freedoms of all citizens, uphold the rule of law without discrimination, and engage in constructive dialogue rather than succumbing to violence and hatred. As the CEO of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, an organization dedicated to accelerating philanthropy in pursuit of a just world, we will continue to work towards pluralism, equity and inclusive democracies where all citizens thrive.

I look forward to the world you describe—including one that gives those baring the relentless violence of our current “democracy” and biased laws a way to be heard without resorting to reciprocation. Until then, I hope we all can hold listening and learning in the same space as our condemnation (which I share). “A riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it America has failed to hear?...It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice and humanity." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “The Other America,” 1968
