We’re absolutely sure that Baron R. Davis, Ph.D.’s keynotes at ASU+GSV Summit this week will get people thinking. And we say that because his recent op-ed for EdPost—co-authored with Institute for Education Innovation CEO and Founder Doug Roberts—got *us* thinking about what’s behind the exodus of #superintendents and what education leaders can do about it. https://lnkd.in/eEZqHqTH   It’s an honor to work with Dr. Davis, an award-winning #education #leader, former superintendent and high school principal, and CEO and founder of The Noegenesis Group.   In the piece titled “Support Superintendents: Build a Culture of Trust and Stop Turnover, they write, “As devastating as the past four years have been for superintendents, hope is on the horizon. To create meaningful, long-lasting change, it will require a collective effort from communities, educators, and board members.”   They include three key steps for ending the discord and upheaval: 1. Revisit the power of diversity, equity, and inclusion #DEI 2. Bring back bipartisanship to school boards 3. Support and uplift women and leaders of color   Their conclusion: “We’re at a critical crossroads. Political discourse must take a backseat to communication, empathy, and trust to create a culture of respect that flows throughout the district.”   #Education #K12 #ThoughtLeadership #Leaders  

Districts across the country continue to face teacher shortages and high turnover—especially in the highest-poverty schools. Now is a pivotal moment. School system leaders must move beyond traditional recruitment and retention efforts and address the root cause of these problems. The teaching job must be redesigned to ensure that every child has access to strong teaching every day. But the fundamental shifts and big trade-offs to do this demand state level action in concert with strong district level leadership. State education leaders play a critical role in ensuring the conditions are there for this innovative work to take place. @Education Resource Strategies’ latest content reveals the state leader’s role in driving change, including two concrete examples of this work being done in Texas and Maryland, and a tool for state leaders to get started. It's not just teachers feeling burned out; school administrators are also starting to leave education. According to an article by Mark C. Perna, "nearly half (46%) of district superintendents planned to leave within two or three years...." Perna sites research from the RAND Corporation. We, as representatives of Maryland APA had an opportunity to meet students, faculty, and partner alongside constituent organization representatives at The George Washington University PA Program. A huge THANK YOU for coordinating and hosting us all!! These types of engagements are often reflective for me, which serves as a meaningful learning experience I later integrate into my ‘being.’ Our messaging for student involvement included not only the traditional ‘why join?’ information, but perhaps more importantly, we encouraged students to BE BOLD. The reasons that led each of them (and us) into a PA school-career pathway are the same reasons that don’t simple end at graduation. Too often, we get stuck in the cycle of familiarity. It is far easier for humans to continue momentum rather than to stop and start on what seems like a new path, even if receiving warning signs along the way that we are headed into dangerous or treacherous territory. Cultivating a culture where it’s acceptable to “press pause” in order to effectively reevaluate a situation is not wasteful, it’s responsible, and we need all the help possible to join in. Choose to open the doors toward healing and resilience. It is a lifelong journey and getting involved in organizations that fundamentally support the profession and align with your values is worth the investment. Through them, the impact of our intentions are amplified through collective action. Whatever doesn’t join us allows doubt and isolation to create gaps. Diversity of representation potentiates that bridge toward unification, shared accountability, and mutual respect. Without discomfort and fear, we would not have the opportunity to be courageous and demonstrate acts of bravery. BE BOLD. Investiture in school for the school council is important for several reasons: Why Investiture is Required: 1. Formality and Recognition: -It gives a formal recognition to the elected or selected council members. - It marks the beginning of their responsibilities. 2. Ceremony and Tradition: - The investiture ceremony is a tradition that highlights the importance of student leadership. - It instills a sense of pride and duty in the council members. 3. Accountability: - It makes the council members aware of their roles and responsibilities. - It holds them accountable to their peers and teachers. 4. Motivation: - It motivates the council members to perform their duties with dedication. - It inspires other students to aspire for leadership roles. Role of the School Council: 1. Representation: - Council members represent the student body and voice their concerns and suggestions. - They act as a bridge between the students and the school administration. 2. Leadership : - They lead by example and help in maintaining discipline and order. - They organize and manage school events and activities. 3. Responsibility: - They take responsibility for various school initiatives, such as cleanliness drives or fundraising events. - They help in implementing school policies and ensuring students follow rules. 4. Communication: - They facilitate communication between students and teachers. - They help in resolving conflicts and promoting a positive school environment. 5. Development: - Being part of the council helps students develop leadership, communication, and organizational skills. - It prepares them for future roles in higher education and beyond. So many important open and ongoing discussions on how we can help to achieve a better and fairer schools' agreement. Back in 2018 there was an article that was published about education particularly in North Tulsa. One of the quotes that always stuck with me said this: "Students who don’t get into these two [Carver and Booker T] schools quickly slip into depression, thinking their lives are over. They shut down, even if they’ve scored as advanced on state and national standardized tests. They become emotionally closed off when they don’t read or hear the words “We accept ____________ to the Carver Middle School or Booker T. Washington family”. For North Tulsa students, the saying goes. It’s “Carver Middle School or Bust” I'm here to tell you that is the furthest thing from the truth. Our kids, especially those that have been with us for 3 years are joyful, leaders, and have become a family. They have succeeded on the field and in the classroom. They have taken their 8th grade PSAT, have formal coming up and experience clubs like Monroe Philanthropy, Debate and over 20 other afterschool opportunities. We have 8th grade students who have chosen to continue their high school studies at: McLain, Central, TSAS, Rogers, Northstar and Booker T (to name a few). There were a lot of words that were used to describe (non-carver/booker t) students in that 2018 article and I can confidently say.. they were wrong No place i'd rather be, and as always our scholars showing what is possible. #VPE
