Keir Starmer’s pledge to embrace civil society as a key engine for national renewal is to be welcomed. Charities and voluntary groups are rooted in local communities and have a passion for change that government’s neglect at their peril. The relationship will not always be smooth, nor should it be. Charities have a duty to speak out in support of their beneficiaries and this will, on occasion, bring them into conflict with government. But it is out of this creative tension and mutual respect that good policy is made that helps deal with the most pressing challenges we face.
