How to Reduce Nurse Turnover Rate by More Than 50% In the wake of staffing challenges post-COVID-19, one healthcare system has dramatically turned the tide on nurse turnover and patient care with its pioneering virtual nursing program. Reducing turnover from 25% to an impressive 11%, the program not only revitalized staff passion but also significantly improved patient outcomes. Starting as a 90-day pilot in June 2022 due to increased patient care complexity and a surge in less experienced staff, the initiative quickly showed promising results, leading to a permanent establishment one year later. This virtual care team – comprising nurses, hospitalists, pharmacists, and respiratory therapists – provides a "virtual safety net" for patients by remotely monitoring and interacting with them, thus enhancing bedside care. The results? A notable decrease in falls, hospital-acquired infections, and most importantly, nurse turnover. Their commitment to alleviating bedside nurses' burdens has not only ensured better patient care but has also reignited staff enthusiasm for their profession. “Virtual nursing has impacted our patients in a positive way, it has improved quality and it has reinvigorated and refueled our staff's passion for what they do." This breakthrough in healthcare showcases the transformative power of innovation and the potential of virtual nursing to reshape the future of patient care and staff satisfaction.
