After attending this week’s packed #AFA Air Warfare Symposium (note to the Gaylord – attendance numbers and parking capacity need to be roughly equal), it's clear that the Department of the Air Force’s (DAF) approach to Great Power Competition (#GPC)—where agility and innovation rule the day—is very much similar to large and complex corporate mergers and acquisitions (M&As). Drawing from a couple of days of discussions and reflections, including insights from #Deloitte M&A veterans, I assert that the #airforce and #spaceforce must embrace an M&A mindset to revolutionize their operations and strategic stance. Successful corporations use M&A for swift growth, tech access, and competitive edges; the Air Force should too, to spearhead its transformation and secure its position in global defense. Adopting M&A strategies allows for rapid integration of the latest technologies and methods. By partnering with top M&A advisors and pioneering defense startups, the Air Force can skip over traditional development delays, gaining immediate advancements in AI, cybersecurity, drone, and space defense technologies. This boosts operational effectiveness and nurtures the innovation and adaptability our Airmen and Guardians need. An M&A strategy streamlines resource use, cuts redundancies, and frees up funds for critical capabilities and future projects. It fosters collaborative R&D, merging military know-how with the private sector's speed and creativity to address complex problems that conventional methods struggle with. Implementing this approach will significantly change the game for the Air Force, driving it towards unmatched strategic and operational dominance. Boldness is essential for national security and global stability, and it's time for the DAF to make this audacious, and critically necessary, leap.

CREATIVE DISRUPTORS IN THE DESERT! February 23–24, 2024 At the Creative Defense Foundation, we are at the forefront of national security innovation. We are innovators who specialize in facilitating partnerships between U.S. entrepreneurs, congressional leaders, and national security thought leaders. We provide a forum for developing global solutions to improve America’s competitiveness in a rapidly changing national security ecosystem.   Over a day and a half, Disruptors in the Desert https://lnkd.in/enpErWCX will feature six panels (each running approximately 90 minutes) in the style of TED Talks, a keynote lunch program, an exhibit hall, two breakfasts, two receptions, and unprogrammed break sessions allowing participants to meet outside of the plenary sessions. The invited guests will be comprised of 100 carefully curated companies in the national security field that offer America an innovative technology, weapon, platform, system, service, and/or team that is considered to be disruptive to the status quo. Additionally, key decision-makers from America’s national security agencies will be invited to attend and engage with participants.   The conference is designed as a focused, collaborative, expert-led discussion, unlike other defense conferences. A “murder board” of experts will be empaneled throughout the conference to drill down and identify, in real-time, actionable items – and the offices that can effectuate those actions.
