Oxygen Minimum Zones, or OMZs, are areas in the water column with less oxygen, primarily due to naturally occurring physical and biological processes within the Ocean. The core of the OMZ is anoxic, making them inhospitable to most large animals, yet microbes have adapted to live and thrive in this oxygen-starved environment. During the #OxygenMinimumMicrobes Expedition, an international team of researchers is working in the eastern tropical South Pacific off the coast of Chile. They strive to deepen our scientific knowledge of OMZs, which have substantial ecological significance, and this research will help us to predict and understand the future health of the ocean, our atmosphere, and the humans who depend on these resources for survival. Submit your abstract for The AMSA & NZMSS 2024 Conference symposia before 15/March/2024. Advancements in Monitoring, Modelling, and Forecasting Water Quality for Sustainable Estuarine and Coastal Ecosystems Convenors: Nagur Cherukuru (CSIRO) , Tim Ingleton (NSW Department of Planning and Environmen), Mark Doubell (South Australian Research and Development Institute) Estuarine and coastal aquatic ecosystems worldwide face a significant challenge of water quality degradation, driven by both natural processes and anthropogenic influences. This degradation adversely affects crucial aspects such as aquatic biogeochemistry, underwater light availability, water column productivity, and benthic habitats. The consequences of declining water quality extend to disruptions in the functioning of aquatic ecosystems, ultimately leading to socio-economic losses for human populations reliant on these resources. Consequently, there is an urgent need to employ comprehensive monitoring, modelling, and forecasting strategies to develop sustainable management approaches for estuarine and coastal ecosystems. This symposium aims to unite experts, researchers, and practitioners specializing in estuarine and coastal water quality. The event seeks to facilitate discussions on the latest advancements in monitoring, modelling, and forecasting techniques, providing a platform for sharing cutting-edge research, innovative methodologies, and successful case studies. Key topics to be addressed include progress in sensor networks, remote sensing applications, ecosystem modelling, machine learning models, and integrated monitoring and forecasting approaches. Abstract submissions and active participation are encouraged in this symposium dedicated to advancing the science and application of monitoring, modelling, and forecasting, with a specific focus on sustainable management of estuarine and coastal water quality. #AMSA2024 #AquawatchAustralia #remotesensing #insitusensing #forecasting #waterquality https://lnkd.in/gkN8Esv2

It was an interesting exchange regarding the standardization of #citizenscience practices for #freshwater investigation during the workshop organized by OTTERS Project colleagues at the #ecsa24 conference. Looking forward to learning more about the workshop outcomes! #BOKU #ecosystemservices #aquaticresources
Last Friday the 5th of April, OTTERS held a successful workshop at the ECSA - European Citizen Science Association 2024 conference in Vienna, Austria, on overcoming challenges of standardisation in freshwater and marine citizen science. The workshop was structured in a way to gather participants’ thoughts and expertise on four main issues: the standardisation of citizen science practices for freshwater investigation (in particular macroinvertebrates, and chemical and optical water quality), and for marine observation (with a focus on jellyfish and litter). The workshop was moderated by ECSA (Carolina Doran, Joe Jubb, Franziska Stressmann, Leonardo Veronesi). After a brief introduction of the project, our consortium experts presented the issues at stake and led the different sessions detailed above. The speakers were GEORGIOS SYLAIOS (Democritus University of Thrace), Dori Edelist (University of Haifa), Emily Robertson (University of Haifa), Steven Loiselle (Università degli Studi di Siena/CSGI) and Bruna Gumiero (University of Bologna/CSGI). https://lnkd.in/dx2j-HEg #EU #OTTERS #ECSA2024 #Jellyfish #Marine #Litter #Observation #standardisation #Freshwater #CitizenScience #MissionOcean

Did you know that Plankton are amongst the most diverse groups of organisms on earth? They are essential to supporting the primary production and nutrient cycling in the ocean. At the MBA, we are home to the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) Survey. Designed in the 1920s by Sir Alister Hardy, the CPR unit collects and filters plankton, helping us to understand the importance of natural changes and human-induced changes in our ocean. 🌟 In 2023 we launched the iCPR project which aims to enhance global plankton monitoring capabilities! The iCPR is equipped with advanced sensors, capturing key environmental variables and detailed plankton imaging using a holographic camera; enabling us to visualise biological contents without disintegrating cell structures. 🌊 The CPR Survey is now trialling the iCPR in the Irish Sea, Norwegian Sea, Labrador Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. ➡️ The role of the iCPR sampler is taking our understanding of the ocean to the next level.
