Lesson of the week: Learn to “ski” the variables. ⛷️ Just like skiing, not every day in sales will have the perfect conditions. There will be good weeks, tough days, problems, wins, and everything in between. But just like a good skier, it's important to learn how to ski the variables and enjoy the day. As someone who loves skiing, I've learned to enjoy all conditions - powder, icy, early season, and spring skiing. I've learned to adapt and make the most of what's in front of me. Of course, I always hope for powder, but that's not always possible. Similarly, in sales, not every day will be perfect, but that doesn't mean you can't have fun and enjoy what you do. Learn to adapt, try to master a new skill, do something different, and make the most of what's in front of you. "Go skiing*", is my answer Yep, that's what I'm doing this week in Mayerhofen, Austria. Doing a task that requires your full concentration because you don't want to get injured is a great way to make sure you're not scrolling on your phone, checking emails all the time, refreshing LinkedIn, going and checking what's in the fridge, having a random chat, etc. It's amazing how little I've been distracted since I started skiing yesterday. The thing is you don't have to go skiing to recreate this effect. Just ask yourself: "would I do this distracting activity if I was skiing right now?" If the answer is no then put the distracting action down and go back to your main task. Simple! * other activities that also require full focus also work in this situation. Learning from mistakes This picture is from my winter holiday where I went skiing without checking the local conditions good enough. I didn’t prepare well and had to pay the price of poor skis. 🤔 Skiing for me is also an opportunity to clear my head and structure my thoughts and on this particular trip I thought about failures and how great they are for learning, but at the same time how difficult it is to create a culture where people feel safe to experiment, fail, learn from mistakes and talk about it 🫡 One thing I try to focus on myself is trying to set a good example by showing humility and admitting mistakes myself when I make them for hopefully others to follow. 💡On this skiing trip I also had a crazy idea about introducing a fuck-up of the year award to be run together with our plant of the year award in December🤷♂️ What do you think?
