It was just for laughs, but something about it stuck with me. The more I thought about it ...and with pressure getting 'wesser' from plantain-lovers all over social media, the more I realised: this could actually work. Fast forward to today, and that joke is now a reality. DÒDÒ isn’t just an idea anymore; it’s a real product. But getting here wasn’t easy. I saw a gap in the UK’s £1.17 billion rum market—a need for something fresh, something that speaks to people who are tired of the same old pirate-themed rums. I knew DÒDÒ could fill that gap as a challenger! My goal was clear: I set to create a rum that’s not just another bottle on the shelf. I wanted something that celebrates culture, blending the rich heritage of West Africa and the Caribbean with a modern twist. Partnering with a UK-based distillery and a global flavouring compnay, we made sure every drop of DÒDÒ was crafted with care and lived up to the expectations. The journey had its challenges, from perfecting the flavour to figuring out how to stand out in a crowded market. I believed in DÒDÒ every step of the way. "Health-Ade Kombucha was started to solve hair loss." Then they blew up to be $300M+ in sales. I interviewed Vanessa Dew, Co-Founder of Health-Ade during our Authentic Asian Fireside Chat about her amazing journey. From humble beginnings at the Farmer's Market to selling nationwide in Trader Joe's and now in over 50,000 stores. It's incredible to hear how one idea can pivot into an astronomical success. But it doesn't always start out successful. There are many pivots that happen along the way. Here are a few of Vanessa's learnings on entrepreneurship: 1) Invest and bet on yourself - She was constantly learning from competitor brands and the market. Internally, she developed strength in vulnerability, authenticity and learning to delegate through Executive Coaching. 2) Building the right team - Your company will grow from good to great with the right team members who remove roadblocks and help figure out the right strategies. 3) Profit Margins - In CPG industry, margins are thin so this was a harsh reality. Get good at lean manufacturing. And the jury is still out about kombucha curing hair loss. 🙄 What do you think?
