I finally took the time to watch Grounded II from Naughty Dog and it was such a good documentary. As a huge fan of this game, there are a couple of things I wanted to emphasize and share with all of you that caught my attention. Spoiler alerts to anyone who didn't watch it, don't read my very long post below. :D 1. The documentary starts with a well-known fact- Joel's demise sending shockwaves through the gaming community(and Naughty Dog's team as well). Yes, I was one of those, dare to say, very pissed off and also sad people. But, as someone who studied literature myself, I do realize how this tragic event served as a crucial catalyst for character development and plot progression. Whether beloved or despised, no character is immune in games of such genre. And to me, that's what makes #thelastofus such a good game. 2. Was it even necessary to make a second game? Personally, I don't think so. The first game is a story in itself and was quite enough in my opinion. Was I still happy to have a chance to play a second part: absolutely yes! 3. The complex relationship between Abby and Ellie: I loved the option of getting to see 2 sides of the coin. Both of them had their reasons for revenge. So how do you choose which character you like more? Which side did you choose? In the end, revenge didn't bring their loved ones back. And, then what? 4. The toxic behavior of the fandom: Laura Bailey, who portrayed the character of Abby, faced harassment, and even death threats for their involvement in the project. Can't emphasize enough how wrong and awful this is. No individual should ever be subjected to such toxicity simply for their portrayal of a character in a video game. Without villains and antagonists to challenge our protagonists, games, and genres like The Last of Us wouldn't even exist. Someone needs to bring these characters to life, and that's the actor's job to do so. 5. Game's infamous leaks: still remember the whole internet buzzing about this at the time. Robbing developers and companies of the opportunity to unveil their creations on their own terms is just not acceptable. Leaks undermine the months, if not years, of hard work and dedication poured into a project but it also disrespect the artistic process as a whole. 6. COVID-19 pandemic: I think that transitioning to remote work was a great chance for a big studio like Naughty Dog to see that remote work can also be beneficial in many ways. As long as you have a good team, nothing can stop you from creating miracles, no matter where you are in the world. 7. And as a last thing, my only regret is that they didn't put enough emphasis on music, as music is my favorite thing in the Last of Us franchise. Every once in a while graphs, numbers and data sets have the potential to be enlightening so as to make someone literally say “ah ha!”. This is one of those graphs. The data shown here is stark and the graph is so powerful that you can’t help but feel the Vanguard system was a resounding success. You even get a sense that they switched on the algorithm and it started churning just picking bots and scripts at a rapid pace. Like with other programs though this will likely be an arms race with the next period being similar to the graph shown below. Basically we’ll probably see another method of cheating soon to “one-up” the detection methods currently programmed into Riot’s Vanguard. Still good news for the moment.
