As a second year law student, I traveled to Chicago for a minority job fair. Despite being selected for only one interview, I was excited for the opportunity to interview at this law firm. Unfortunately, upon arrival, I learned that this law firm had canceled all interviews due to an interviewer calling in sick. I told the organizer about my situation, but there was nothing she could do. A lawyer from another firm overheard our conversation and offered to interview me on the spot. The interview was a disaster since I was flustered with the situation, and I left with no leads. I did, however, learn a few valuable takeaways: ♦ Even during frustrating situations, keep your cool. How you react to an adverse situation can define your career path. ♦ A kind gesture can go a long way. The lawyer who interviewed me didn't have to interview me, and I will never forget his kindness. #careerlessons #lawstudent #lawfirm

I was at the UNC Law Criminal Career Fair this week. The most common question I was asked is: “What do you look for on a resume for an intern?” The answer is simple. I dont look at your GPA or your participation in a law journal. While those are great, I can teach you the law. What I can’t teach you is how to deal with people. What I look for? What jobs have you had outside of law? Did you work as in the service industry? If you were a server at a restaurant on a busy friday, you can handle people. If you worked at the Starbucks drive thru during covid, you can handle people. If you were a bartender, you can handle people. The law can be taught. Working with people who are having a very bad day cannot be taught.

This is my cover letter story. It was late in the evening, and I drove up to Rutgers for a job fair. I'd recently had a lot of back-and-forth with a recruiter for a role, and I thought she might be at the fair and it would be a good way to reconnect. And while I was there, I took a picture of myself with the Janice Levin building in the background; don't know what prompted me to do that but I did. I don't want to say anything about the whole job fair experience, but I did apply for an open job at Rutgers right after that. I have a few Rutgers people in my network here, and I am sure they will disagree with me, but my experience with Rutgers HR has always been negative. And that led me to write the cover letter. "Let me be clear about this," I wrote. "I don't think I have any shot at this job. I have applied to I don't know how many jobs at Rutgers in the last five years. I got one interview, right after I graduated, and it was a nightmare and the recruiter quit in the middle of the process and I didn't get the job." "I don't know if a person is reading this or not. If you're an artificial intelligence algorithm, I can try to tell you that I'm a good candidate... I know I can do the job but the reality is that a lot of other people can, too, and you can't hire everyone and you have to ignore some people who would really just like a chance." "I'm just hoping that there's a person reading this (and thank you if you've read this far) and has five minutes to make a phone call and say, look, we're not giving you a job or anything... but all you have to do is persevere and maybe you'll come across something that works for you. Like the song says, it's too much too expect, but it's not too much to ask. I love Rutgers and would like to be a part of it, and maybe this message gets through to some real person." And I added the photo of me standing in front of the SMLR building. Now. This is... not a good approach. It is basically whiny. It is asking for special pleading, which is not ideal. It has with it a deep undercurrent of stress and resentment. But it worked. I got the interview. I think I got fair consideration. And I actually got told I didn't get the job. It was right after I interviewed for the job I have now, so it wasn't that painful. (I literally got the call in the parking lot.) My point is this: your cover letter needs to be about you and your connection to the organization. It needs to accompany your resume, not recapitulate it. And it needs to shed light on who you are as a person, which your resume just can't do. A generic cover letter does nothing. A personal cover letter might be your golden ticket.

HUGE NEWS: employer registration for the National Plaintiffs' Law Association's second ever job fair is live! https://lnkd.in/gHgPytQP The National Plaintiffs' Law Association is a community of students, alumni, and plaintiffs' attorneys passionate about increasing law student access to and awareness of opportunities in plaintiffs-side representation. Our annual job fair is a cornerstone of that mission. Created as an alternative to on-campus recruiting programs that funnel rising 2L towards large defense firms, we had more than 400 student sign-ups last year—our first ever event! This year, we want to do even more. The virtual job fair—where employers can use our digital platform to schedule and host their interviews—will run from August 5-8th, but we want this program to be valuable outside of that one week. With big law summer recruiting happening earlier and earlier, we're planning on launching our digital platform on June 17, allowing students to know their options and see a comprehensive list of plaintiffs' side employers early in their job search. Don't wait: sign up today! https://lnkd.in/gHgPytQP

A few of my recent conversations with young professionals have had a theme: how do you get the job you really want? My answer is pretty simple: keep asking for it. Moxy gets you farther than you may think, and it has for me. When I wanted to be an intern in the United States Senate, I found out the name of Senator Hillary Clinton's intern coordinator and sat in the lobby until he had time to speak with me. While he couldn't hire me, he did walk me down the hall to Senator Jon Corzine's Office and hand them my resume. They hired me on the spot. When I wanted to be a Deputy District Attorney, I applied for court certified law clerk positions. I didn't get an interview with Washington County, so I approached them at a job fair and asked why. They said they didn't think I'd be available as much as they needed me to be since I went to school a couple hours away. I assured them that wouldn't be an issue, so they interviewed and hired me. Keep telling people what you want and asking how to get there. #determination #jobadvice

THIS IS A PERSONAL ACCOUNT Assistant District Attorney General - Trial attorney handling criminal cases. Opinions my own.
Law students, The government offices may or may not come to OCI's. Many will not. Yet many of you would love to work for a government agency. In my experience, many legal jobs are hidden. So, if you can pull back the curtain and discover where those jobs exist, you are ahead of the game. This District Attorney job fair is well worth your time if you can make it up to the DC area - link below. In my experience, public defender jobs, district attorney jobs, city attorney jobs, and county attorney jobs are 100% overlooked. Unlike in 1998, when I graduated, these groups are having difficulty finding qualified people. On top of that, many are seeing experienced, long-time people retire. These jobs are not for everyone. Your law school rank will be looked at (maybe) for a second, as will where you went to law school. What they will look at is your desire to do the job, proven interest in the type of work, whether you are likable, whether you are someone who will work the mountain of unending work, do you have a good sense of humor (gallows humor prevails), and are you teachable. These jobs are fun. They give you transferable skills. You will handle your own cases. You will get free training opportunities. You will meet hundreds of lawyers. You will get to interact with judges. #lawstudents
