OCCAR (Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation) has exercised an option for building the fourth new-generation submarine related to the U212NFS (Near Future Submarine) program for the Italian Navy (Marina Militare Italiana), which was assigned to FINCANTIERI. The unit has a total value of approximately 500 million euros, including the related Integrated Logistic Support and In-Service Support. The signature also activates all other options that complete the maintenance support for the submarines already contracted. The U212NFS submarines will by highly innovative, with significant design modifications that will all be developed independently by Fincantieri, which holds the role of Design Authority and Prime Contractor, in accordance with the Navy requirements. The program responds to the need to secure adequate underwater spatial surveillance and control capacity, considering the future complex scenarios of underwater operations and the fact that the end of the operational lifetime of the four “Sauro” class submarines currently in service is drawing near. The U212NFS submarines will also join the four operational U212A class submarines, including the Romei which is currently undergoing scheduled maintenance at the Muggiano shipyard. Indian Navy’s DSRV Locates Long-Lost Pakistani Submarine Ghazi Off Vizag Coast. Remember 1971 India-Pak war! The PNS Ghazi, a Pakistani submarine, met its demise off the coast of Visakhapatnam during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Tasked with disrupting Indian naval operations, it encountered INS Rajput, leading to a tense underwater confrontation - resulting in its destruction. The exact cause of Ghazi's sinking may be disputed by someone, with possibilities ranging from striking a mine to accidental detonation of its own torpedoes. Regardless, its loss marked a pivotal moment in the conflict, altering the naval dynamics in the Bay of Bengal. INS Rajput's successful defense of the Indian coast cemented its reputation, while the sinking of Ghazi provided a morale boost to the Indian Navy. Delivering new general purpose #frigates for #Australia presents significant challenges. The recent Independent Review of the Royal Australian Navy surface fleet raised more questions than answers. https://lnkd.in/gJ9M_8pv Shephard Media There is no confirmation yet from Defence Australia whether the 'Tier 2' ship designs are a procurement shortlist or for general guidance. The four options seem limited and the selection looks like a Wikipedia exercise. Meanwhile Babcock International Group is talking to Defence about the Type 31 frigate and NAVAL GROUP said the 'Tier 2' frigate are "second rate"! Haha. What is the industrial strategy? Will the ships be modified with an Australianisation of the design or delivered close to the existing design employing indigenous systems? It is a case of speed of delivery vs compatability and there is no right choice. Can the ships deliver the right capability? If vessels be used for seaborne trade protection or for defending Australia's northern approaches, or both? These require a lot of capability on a small ship. India's Self-Reliance Boost: First Homegrown Stealth Frigate Coming 2025. A major step towards self-reliance in India's defence sector is on the horizon, as Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) prepares to deliver the first of its indigenously built Project-17 Alpha (P-17A) stealth frigates. Named “Mahendragiri,” this advanced warship is expected to join the Indian Navy's fleet by August 2025. GRSE is making significant headway on the remaining P-17A frigates, with the second and third ships currently standing at 55% and 43% completion. These vessels are projected for delivery in February and August of 2026, respectively. The P-17A frigates represent a technological leap forward for the Indian Navy. Boasting an impressive 75% indigenous content, they are a testament to India's growing shipbuilding capabilities. Their maiden voyage on the Arabian Sea in September 2023 was a landmark achievement for the nation. Packed with cutting-edge features like advanced weapons, sensors, an action information system, and an integrated platform management system, the P-17A frigates surpass their predecessors, the Project 17 (Shivalik Class) frigates, in stealth, weaponry, and sensor technology. The construction of seven P-17A frigates, split between GRSE and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), significantly enhances India's naval defense. This project also highlights the expertise of the nation's Warship Design Bureau in developing technologically sophisticated warships.
