Through the Richmond Promise Mentor Program, RP Scholars have the opportunity to pair with a professional who can share knowledge, skills, best practices and perspectives that help to foster both personal and professional growth. Prior to the 2023-24 school year, University of San Diego senior Megan Sanchez knew graduate school would be part of her future plans. So, she joined the Mentor Program with the hopes of gaining a bit of guidance as she went through the application process. Eventually, she got paired with Marissa Chávez, Senior Manager of Content at the California College Guidance Initiative, and the two got to work on grad school applications. In March, Megan got the notification that she’d been accepted into the San Diego State Ed.S. in School Psychology program. Richmond Promise staff caught up with both Megan and Marissa to ask a few questions about their experience in the Mentor Program. Click the link below to read more!

In the whirlwind of academic achievements and extracurricular pursuits, it's easy to forget one of the most essential skills our children need: Emotional Intelligence (EQ). EQ isn't just about recognizing emotions; it's about understanding them, managing them, and using that understanding to build stronger relationships, make wiser decisions, and navigate life's challenges with resilience. Here's why nurturing EQ in our children matters now more than ever: 1️⃣ Empathy and Compassion: EQ helps children develop a deep sense of empathy, making them more compassionate and understanding towards others. 2️⃣ Effective Communication: It's the foundation of meaningful connections. Kids with strong EQ skills are better at expressing themselves, listening actively, and resolving conflicts peacefully. 3️⃣ Problem Solving: EQ equips children with the tools to analyze situations, understand various perspectives, and find creative solutions. 4️⃣ Resilience: Life is filled with ups and downs. Children with high EQ can bounce back from setbacks, handle stress, and adapt to change more effectively. 5️⃣ Self-Awareness: Understanding their own emotions and triggers empowers children to make better choices and manage their behavior. 6️⃣ Success in the Future: Studies show that EQ is a stronger predictor of success than IQ. It's an invaluable skill that can lead to personal and professional achievements. At Tickle Right, we understand the importance of EQ development. Our mission is to nurture well-rounded individuals who excel not only academically but also emotionally. We aim to equip our children with the life skills they need to thrive and make a positive impact on the world. #EmotionalIntelligence #EQForKids #Parenting #ChildDevelopment #Empathy #Resilience #CommunicationSkills #EducationMatters #tickleright #rightbraineducation #eq #parenting #parentingtips101 #parentingtips #earlychildhoodeducationandcare

Elevating Schools to foster Resilience for Peak Performance and Self-Mastery | SEL Expert | Educational Leadership Coach | Founder of exSELlens ~ Gold Award in Teaching Innovation 2020 | EFL Teacher Trainer
Early in my career as an educator, I started seeing students struggling to find their own voice, their own path. They were bombarded with external pressures – parental expectations, societal norms, the pressure to FIT IN. But what about their inner compass? 💫 And then I turned this question inwards….What I observed was what I had in me…..Did I have my voice or someone else’s? Where was my voice? 💥 This is why I became passionate about Social Emotional Learning (SEL). My quest to find my voice helped me see how I can help teenagers navigate the emotional rollercoaster of adolescence and build the resilience to face life's challenges. 💫 Now I know… what I didn’t have is what I want my students to have understand and manage their emotions, build healthy relationships, and make responsible decisions. Now, my work is all about helping them transition from self-doubt to self-efficacy, from seeking external validation to building internal strength. 💞 #SEL #Education #StudentSuccess #TeenResilience #GrowthMindset #SocialEmotionalLearning

Excited to share that I've officially completed my degree in psychology! My journey into psychology stemmed from a desire to understand people better and learn how to support them effectively. Coming from a military background, where some embrace a dictatorship mindset, I quickly realized that earning respect yields more success than demanding it based on rank. Studying psychology has equipped me with invaluable tools to enhance communication, problem-solving, active listening, and leadership skills. This degree has opened my eyes to new ways of approaching challenges and interacting with others. I firmly believe that it's never too late to learn and improve oneself. The benefits of this achievement have surpassed my expectations, and I'm thrilled about the growth it has brought me. Cheers to continuous learning and personal development! 🎓 #PsychologyDegree #PersonalGrowth #LeadershipDevelopment

In a world that moves at breakneck speed and places immense value on IQ, we sometimes overlook an equally vital component of a fulfilled, succesful life - Emotional Intelligence. The pertinent question arises: Why wait until adulthood to cultivate a skill as crucial as EQ? Early Emotional Intelligence Education isn't simply about teaching children to recognize and manage their own emotions; it also encompasses nurturing empathy and interpersonal skills that serve as the bedrock of their lifelong relationships. 💚 It can start simple: teaching kids to put a name to their feelings, understanding that emotions are normal, and guiding them to appropriate expressive outlets. 💚 Role-playing and social stories can advance their ability to empathize, to put themselves in another's shoes, and to engage in social perspective-taking. 💚Group activities can reinforce cooperation, share decision-making experiences, and teach the art of listening – really listening – to others' viewpoints and emotions. Research consistently points out the lifelong advantages of early EQ education: 👍🏼 Improved academic success and work opportunities, as emotional intelligence is increasingly recognised as indispensable in leadership and collaborative roles. 👍🏼Stronger relationships and social connections, because communication and empathy are enablers of deep and lasting bonds. 👍🏼Better mental health outcomes, which stem from being more adept at navigating life's emotional complexities. As educators, parents, and leaders, it's imperative we look beyond conventional education to include this fundamental skill set. With a focus on nurturing emotionally intelligent youngsters, we're not just preparing them for a successful school career; we're equipping them for success in life. Let's embrace the adage that it takes a village to raise a child, and extend that village to include emotional intelligence mentors for our youngest citizens. For further insights into how we can transform the fabric of our educational system to include a more holistic development of our youth, visit www.elmaeducation.com #EmotionalIntelligence #EarlyEducation #Leadership #MentalHealth #FutureLeaders #educationreform

🧠 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐏𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 🧠 As a child psychologist, I've seen firsthand how nuanced feedback can shape a child's growth and resilience. One fascinating approach is the Praise with Disapproval theory, which, when applied thoughtfully, can be a powerful tool for development. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐥? Praise with Disapproval involves pairing positive feedback with a gentle critique. For example: "You did a great job on your homework, but let's work on keeping your desk tidy too." This technique, when used appropriately, can guide children toward continuous improvement. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐈𝐭 𝐁𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥? 🔍 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞: This method helps children understand that while they are doing well, there's always room for improvement. It encourages a growth mindset and continuous learning. 🔍 𝐌𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: By acknowledging their successes and pointing out areas for improvement, children are motivated to maintain their strengths and address their weaknesses. 🔍 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠: It teaches children to appreciate praise while also developing the ability to critically assess their own performance and identify areas for growth. 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐔𝐬𝐞: 🌟 𝐁𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞: Ensure that the disapproval part of your feedback is constructive and specific, helping the child understand exactly what needs improvement. 🌟 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Always start with genuine praise to build confidence. The critique should be seen as an opportunity for further growth, not as a negative judgment. 🌟 𝐄𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Help children reflect on both their strengths and areas for improvement, fostering self-awareness and self-regulation. 🌟 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: Use this approach sparingly to avoid overwhelming the child with criticism. The goal is to create a balanced perspective, not to diminish their accomplishments. At Mirai Minds we are dedicated to nurturing holistic development in children by using effective communication strategies. Embracing the Praise with Disapproval approach can foster resilience, critical thinking, and a balanced perspective in our young learners. #ChildPsychology #PositiveParenting #EffectiveFeedback #ChildDevelopment #GrowthMindset #Education #ParentingTips #LinkedInLearning
