You have nothing to lose when you walk up to someone to initiate a conversation. Charli Turner Thorne played college basketball at Stanford University under hall-of-fame coach Tara VanDerveer. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stanford. Turner Thorne received her master's degree in education at the University of Washington. She moved into coaching as a graduate assistant with the Washington Huskies. Turner Thorne received her first head coaching opportunity with Northern Arizona. She led the program to consecutive winning seasons in 1994-95 and 1995-96. After three seasons at Northern Arizona, Arizona State University hired Turner Thorne. Turner Thorne built a foundation at Arizona State in 25 years with the Sun Devils. She led the Sun Devils to the NCAA Tournament 14 times with five Sweet 16 appearances and two trips to the Elite Eight. In the 2014-15 season, Turner Thorne led the Sun Devils to a regular season sweep of the Stanford Cardinal. Arizona State last swept Stanford in 1984. They became the first program in PAC-12 history with back-to-back sweeps of the Stanford Cardinal during the regular season in 2015-16. Turner Thorne finished her Arizona State tenure with a 488-294 record as head coach. In PAC-12 history, Turner Thorne is one of three coaches leading their schools to five or more consecutive 20-win seasons. For her success at Arizona State, Turner Thorne was named to the 2023 Arizona Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class. This issue is not just a personal hurdle but a systemic challenge faced by many talented individuals seeking roles in collegiate athletics. My journey exemplifies the perseverance and dedication required to excel in the coaching realm, yet it also highlights the barriers that exist within the industry. As a certified racial and restorative justice facilitator, I understand the complexities and nuances of creating inclusive spaces, and I am dedicated to fostering diversity and equity within collegiate coaching. It’s that time of year again when many schools will be embarking on the exciting journey of student leadership elections. Student Representative Councils (SRCs) are said to empower students to influence and change their school and community, providing students with a sense of ownership and agency. The value of SRCs in schools is supported by a large bank of research showing the benefits of student voice and engagement, in everything from student wellbeing to learning outcomes. However opponents argue that SRC’s are largely popularity contests or tokenistic initiatives without any meritocratic processes involved. Regardless of which side you sit on, it's essential to remember that these moments can be emotionally charged for our young leaders-in-the-making. While it's fantastic to witness those elected enthusiastically stepping into their roles, it's equally important to support those who may not have clinched the title this time. 💙 Tips for Nurturing Resilience: 1. Acknowledge Feelings: Let your child express their emotions openly. Acknowledging disappointment is the first step in healing. 2. Encourage Reflection: Help them see beyond the title. Discuss the skills and qualities they showcased during the process. Growth is an ongoing journey! 3. Highlight Other Opportunities: Remind them that leadership isn't confined to a specific role or title. There are numerous ways to contribute positively to their school community. There are numerous organisations who seek the input of primary school students as part of an advisory committee or junior board. 4. Express Gratitude: Encourage gratitude for the experience of running as a candidate and the lessons learned. Every opportunity is a building block for their future success. 5. Future Planning: Discuss their interests and other areas they might want to explore. The journey of self-discovery is vast and exciting.
