Why are 2-door convertible cars called “spider”? The world's first spider motor car was the Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Sport Spider. The original 4-seater sedan ("Berlina") was introduced in 1928, but the 2-seater Spider was sleeker and much faster, and was raced successfully by the likes of Enzo Ferrari. When it came to giving this racing version a catchy name, the designers at Alfa Romeo probably played with the name "speedster", shortened it to "speeder", and spelt it phonetically in Italian as "spider" (though Italians today would pronounce it the English way). Perhaps the name was also inspired by the Hooper Phaeton Spider of 1860, a very light 2-seater open horse-drawn carriage so named because of its large spindly 8-spoked wheels reminiscent of spiders. Another notable "spider" is the 1954 Porsche 550 Spyder. Since then, the term has become generic for a 2-seat open roadster.
