It is good to see that renewable energy has developed hugely over the past few years. Wind power in the UK also made up just over a quarter of all electricity generation in 2022. By investing in renewables, and reducing our need for fossil fuels, we can become less reliant on the wholesale market, which in turn could lower our energy bills in the future and provide more consistency. IEEFA Asia Pacific's latest report finds that the upcoming surge of #renewables and #storage leaves no space for the Eraring coal power station. Johanna Bowyer worked with ITP renewables to model a few electricity scenarios. They found that: 1️⃣ The Australian government’s recently expanded Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) will play a key role in achieving its 82% renewable energy target by 2030, supporting the majority of new renewable capacity required. 2️⃣ The first tranche of winning NSW projects under the CIS would be enough to ensure the reliability standard is met after the planned closure of the Eraring coal-fired power plant. 3️⃣ It is not necessary to keep Eraring open beyond its planned closure in 2025, and propping Eraring up would undermine the financial viability of the remaining coal generators, even under a low renewables scenario. 👉 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gziBYx-V Johanna Bowyer #renewableenergy #energy #energytransition

Renewable energy won't leave you freezing in the dark. Provincial electricity regulators know this, but some politicians have an agenda to block competition for their fossil fuel masters. Big Oil has worked hard to capture the political right and turn support for renewables into strong opposition. This mindset halts badly needed energy diversification and kills really interesting renewable energy projects.
