The more we talk about the long term impact of Military Sexual Trauma the better 🙏

What is about having power over someone else that is so compelling? In this week's episode Ali Baird and I are talking with Tony Wright from Forward Assist. We are talking about Moral Injury and Military Sexual Trauma and how it isn't recognised by HM Forces and the Ministry of Defence. MST can and is used as a tool of power and coercion over more vulnerable members of the armed forces and beyond. It is an intergenerational trauma as suffers don't want to disclose to their spouse/partner and child due to shame, guilt and humiliation. Something needs to be done. the female veteran community is leading the way by highlighting what they went through. The men who suffered through this are keeping quiet possibly due to the reasons listed above. The MST and Moral Injury also ripple through the veteran LGBT+ community as well and that is a subject we want to have a deeper exploration on. 80 years ago, the eyes of the world were upon Allied troops as they fought their way onto the shores of Normandy, France, to take Europe back from the Nazis. Here are some of the key roles our alumni have taken on: * One of our alumni teams up with veterans as their scuba diving "buddy," meeting those with scuba certifications for dives at local spots. * Several alumni participate in our "Battle Buddy" program and provide crucial support to incoming veterans. * Another local alumni offers daily morning meditation sessions at the beach, promoting gratitude, balance, and peace for our veterans. * We also have an alumni who assists veterans in creating and managing VA disability claims. * Another dedicated alumni developed 22P's application portal, providing the first touchpoint for veterans with our organization. * We also have an alumni who captures and edits all of our veteran testimonials, ensuring their stories are shared. These are just a few of the creative ways our veteran alumni have gotten involved and choose to give back to their brothers and sisters. Yesterday I had the chance to hang out with some young Gurkha soldiers, and it was amazing! It really got me thinking about how awesome these folks are. Did you know that Gurkhas have been fighting side by side with British troops for over 200 years? That's two whole centuries of serving the UK, just like any other British soldier! But here's something that's been bugging me lately. I've noticed that some people still use terms like "Non-UK personnel" or "Non-UK Veterans" when talking about Gurkhas and Commonwealth soldiers. What would happened if we start calling NHS nurses & doctors from overseas as NON-UK staff simply because they were not born in the UK. Everyone knows that Gurkhas and Commonwealth are not UK born. At Op Belonging we think that's not cool at all and I will showcase the lived experience of those folks after leaving the military from 1944 to 2024 in my next book also called OP BELONGING : When Did Britain Stop Seeing Us As a Band of Brothers. Our mission is simple: we believe that anyone who's worn a British uniform and risked their life for Britain should be considered part of the country they serve. It doesn't matter where they were born. If they've put on that uniform, take the oath of allegiance to the King and Country, they belong here, period. What do you think about this?
