Just came across a post discussing the hiring challenges in the restoration industry, and it really struck a chord with me. Let me share a perspective that might just shift the way we’re thinking about this whole issue. You know, there’s a lot of talk about how hard it is to find people willing to work for $17-22 an hour as technicians. But maybe we’re missing the bigger picture here. It’s not just about the wage; it’s about the opportunity. We’re competing with the gig economy, sure, but we’re also up against a traditional path that’s pretty ingrained in our society: go to college, get in debt (let’s say $50k for argument’s sake), and then start a job with a salary range of $55k to $80k. But here’s the thing: there’s another path, one that’s often overlooked. What if a laborer steps into the restoration industry and, right from the start, gets to choose a career trajectory with their manager? Imagine a scenario where in four years, they could become a project manager, a salesperson, an ops manager, or an estimator. These are high-paying roles, offering $80-$100k, and they come with a kind of paid apprenticeship, complete with training and clear goals. This approach requires commitment, not just from the new hires but from the leadership too. It means quarterly meetings to discuss progress and goals, and it’s about nurturing and supporting each worker’s journey, recalibrating along the way just like a Google Maps app when you take a wrong turn or decide to switch your destination. We don’t necessarily need to overhaul the industry or hike up the wages across the board. What we need is to carve out clear, attainable paths within our existing structure. I’m speaking from experience here. I took a significant pay cut when I first joined this industry because I saw the opportunity it presented. I started as a temp laborer in Seattle (not the cheapest city, mind you) for Munters, earning $18 an hour. In four years, not only was I making the salary I aimed for, but I was also climbing through opportunities and promotions. (Shout out to Frank Dobosz for supporting my progress like a real leader does) I’m living proof that this path works. It’s a way to bring in more talent and become a desirable workplace.
